Is this something you can do yourself or should I take it somewhere to be done. Could someone colaborate on the situation?

I'm pretty sure you can do it yourself, I'm not sure though, can somene confirm this? it would suck for it to go off while trying to take it out

Never done it myself, but Chiltons covers how to remove the airbag and steering wheel. I haven't looked at the passenger side airbag, though.
Will the car run with them taken out? Do you have to fool the car to think that they are still there?

yes you can do it it takes about 5 minutes. disconnect the battery first. then unscrew the bolts on the back of the steering wheel, pul the cover off, and unplug the bag. on the passengers side, remove the glovebox and look up, youll see i think 4 bolts holding the passenger airbag cover in place. unplug that one too. keep in mind, if you want to remove the passenger bag, youll have to do something like i did and cut the bag away from the cover, or make a new cover from something else, because its all one piece.

This is not a smart idea....my friend did this. 2 weeks later, he wrecked his car, was hit from behind at 75 MPH, head went threw the windsheild and came back threw. he thought he was blind. turns out it was his scalp hanging over his face. he had to have it all stiched back one, it cut from the back of his neck all the way to the middle of his forhead. you could see bones here. now his hair grows funny, im serious, they are there for a reason. keep the airbags buddy....

I've considered taking mine out as well, because I am afraid of the damn things hurting me. I'm short, and I sit closer to the wheel than most people. I was in an accident last year in my old car w/o airbags, and I didn't hit the wheel or anything, but I was going much slower, maybe 20 or so. I just keep thinking if I had an airbag in that car I would have been hurt by it. They go off in any accident over 15 mph, right? It's a tough decision . . .

I dont think I could live with myself if I end living through an accident and my passenger didnt cause they didnt have an airbag...

sheez I was just curious Im not gonna take the bags cause some guy said you had to have a emulator or something to put on the plugs of the bags so they dont go off when you take em out.... I guess he was wrong and I won the bet... I figure Ill mount my ps2 somewhere else then not worth the risk of no bags...:-)

thank you guys, you are smart ones! my friend did break his neck, he was in ICU for almost a month, and had to have a halo when stiches were removed. he had 2 kids and a wife at home, thnk god he lived. also, if the guy who hit him hadnt been drunk, this never would have happened. dont drink and drive......

Not to dwell on this, but I was wondering, wasn't he wearing a seatbelt?
Wouldn't that have been enough to hold him in place?

yeah no offense but youre friend is an idiot for not wearing a seatbelt...thats why they are there...if he was he wouldnt have gone far enough to break the windsheild. and like he said, airbags injure more people than they save. by some 4% or so. (of course that figure does not include those who were saved by airbags that werent wearing seatbelts, as it shouldnt account for lack of common sense)

Slow down guys, I don't remember her saying he wasn't wearinghis seat belt. In a severe enough accident the seat belt mounts can break, crunch the B Pillar right and the 3 point seat belt is only anchored in that one place it can break...

But yeah I always wear my seatbelt, eventually I'll take my driver's side airbag out, but not until I have 4 point harnnasses. Then I need to decide if the passenger bag comes out or not.

Airbags kill more small kids and people who sit too close to the steering wheel (especially unstrapped), but they are there to help. I did A LOT of research on air bags cause I too was tired of the freakin' boat-size steering wheel our cars come with but I decided to just keep it, you never know what's going to happen. A harness might be best but i know i'm not going to be putting that shiz on everytime I drive. Oh yeah, in my quest I found that there's a way to defeat the airbag light for those of you who did take yours out, let me know and i'll see if i can find the link.

I'm asking to find out if the seatbelts did break. If her poor buddy was, in fact, properly wearing his seatbelt, it makes a strong point for keeping the airbag in the car and/or adding a three or four point harnesses. Don't you think?

Besides, it should be obvious that the airbag or SRS-Supplimental Restraint System, is exactly that, supplimental, or "in addition to", and should never be used instead of a seatbelt. And since I have heard horror stories of the airbags doing more damage than benefit, maybe, with a harness, removing them wouldn't be so bad.

I was in an accedent in a ford probe. it had a drivers air bag and i wish it hadn't. the collision was only 25-30 maybe 35 but any way the air bag went of and burnt the fuck out of me (face, arm). It pissed me off because i didn't even move forward it just came out real far and hit me. any way i don't like air bags, BUT they would be helpful in an accedent at higher speeds (50+) IMO anything below is a waist.

airbags were designed to work IN CONJUNCTION with seatbelts. most injuries from airbags are people who don't wear the seat belt and smack into the bag as it's inflating instead of deflating. i was in an accident in a 97 maxima i was wearing my seatbelt of course and the airbag hit me. we were doing 45 and were hit head on. the extent of my injuries was a sore forehead cause the airbag smashed the brim of my hat and knocked it off, and i had my finger on the seatblet latch and it got cut. other than that the powder on the bag hurt cause the bag is liek a woven material and it burns like a rug burn type of feel. sorta like when you lay on carpet and your elbow digs in. airbags DO work and work well if you wear a seat belt. that was it. my neck wasn't even sore.

the new style air bags are staged, they inflate faster/slower at different speeds and collission impacts. volkswagens are very well known for this and comes standard in audi's

man whats up with you people, ive been in 2 accidents where i wasn't wearing the belt(yes im an ass-ho) and the bag didn't do anything to me and they were g1 airbags, my brother couldn't breathe for a couple seconds but he wasn't sweating it. Really, if they did more damage than good they wouldn't be required in all cars.

if you sell the air bags, buy racing seats and 4/5 points. you won't move very far...

when i flipped my grand am, i was wearing my seat belt and the air bag came out, it tore the right side of my face off, pretty nasty. i'll get a pic up. but i believe it saved my life. i was doing 120 when my tire blew. then i hit a boulder and flipped.

it seems youre either for them or against them. as far as disabling the ABS air bag light, who needs a link to it, its simple, take the bulb out of the back of the gauge cluster where the ABS light is. theres your link
