14451, Air Duct on the top of Eclipse's
Posted by ourformerselves, Feb-10-02 12:06 PM
What's the air duct (if that's what it's even called) after-market piece on the top of some Eclipse's called? I want to get one on my Talon but have no idea what it's called, or where to get it.

The reason they are on eclipses is to look good.

The reason they are on rally cars is because they have no A/C and that forces air on them.

only $100? I saw a Neon who said his was $2000 mostly in labor to mold the scoop on top of your roof which sounds crazy. Someone on here has it on his white Eclipse and it looks nice. I dont remmeber who though.

He got it from Ray for like $75. We used to sell them at my site for $85 but no more. Check ebay.

Wouldn't the wind, especially at high speeds rip the damn thing off the car? I think it looks sweet and would actually consider it in the future...but would it be alright up there?

No road noise, doesnt slow you down, and wont rip off. Mine is on with rivets, fiberglass resin and some other strong glue shit. No bondo. My roofscoop came open holed, but I had them close it witha peice of wood and fiberglass.

I found a place to buy the roof scoops online:

http://prototype.packetlag.org/commerce.cgi?product=Hood/Roof_Scoops

They're $149.99.

Is there an opening in the back of the scoop? Where does the air go that goes into it? If there's no opening in the back, it must slow the car down to some degree.

Niclipse's has the opening blocked off. no air in. and no way to slow the car down. its a 100.00 piece of fiberglass on top of a 2600lbs car, it like thinking you can put your arms out the window at 80mph and "slow down a bit". you would get more drag from the windows being open at 120mph than that little scoop, even if you didnt block of the opening.

Under the 1st picture on team prototype's website, it says...

"You are looking at a universal roof or hood scoop. Yes - this is the same roof scoop used by the green Eclipse on the Fast and the Furious"

While yes that is a roofscoop, that is not same roofscoop as the Eclipse in Fast & Furious and me. I've seen the F&F car in Gattelinburg, TN. just before new years and I have the exact same one, team prototype's is a copy of charisma autotech's roofscoop that VectorRacing's car has, I believe he closed that little crevace too.

How did they mold it on without any bondo? Fiberglass isn't smooth, so how did they get it perfectly smooth? Did they just put lots of fiberglass and sand it down forever til it was smooth?

I'm not a body work guy so I dont know exactly what it is, but they told me it was "Fiberglass resin", it was a green goop, then they applied some pink shit on top of that too.

Hehe the pink stuff is most likely bondo. They put fiberglass sheets and resin (the liquid that dries hard), and then after that, use bondo (pink, orange, green, or red, since there are many kinds) on top to smooth it out. What they probably meant was that they used fiberglass to bond it to the car (and not just pure bondo).

Yeah I think there was just a miscommunication about the bondo. They HAD to put some on there. It just isnt cost effective to fiberglass it and sand it smooth, they would have lost money in labor for what they charge.

BTW 99% of all bondo out there is creme colored, its the hardener thats different colors. I'm not a smart ass, just a body man.
