My reverse lights seem to have a mind of their own. Now that they have free will, they seem to be on crack. Sometimes, when I am driving along, they flash on and off, or stay on. This is very bothersome to me. Any suggestions?

i dunno a short in the wiring.

i don't know that it'd be a short, since power has to go through a relay before hitting the lights. don't hold me to that, though. check for shorts, or a bad relay.

Well, there is a pickup switch on the transmission that tells the lights to go on. Well, it is either in the transmission or in the shifter assembly (A/T). I am looking around in the service manual on my desk right now. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if they have solved it.

Well, sometimes they flash their lights at me. If I have a friend following me, they usually call. Then again, there were those cars that did drive off of the road. j/p

A friend of mine found out that the grounding to each light bilb is really poorly done. It is really loose so it will deattach from the light itself, i dunno if this is what is causing your problem, but i do know that it causes your brake lights to turn off at will and turn back on whenever.

Excellent! A helpful answer! :-P Time to go check all of the grounds back there. Also, my license plate light mounting bracket rusted and crumbled. Friggin' car... :-D

haha...i like to just drive around and turn on and off my blinkers or drive down the road on a sunny day...turn on my left blinker when a car is coming at me and pretend to turn. MAN THAT IS SOME FUNNY ISH! you see them slow down or swerve.

Most definetly relay related..... If the grounds were bad, it WOULD go on and off, but, only when the car is IN reverse.

That is a good point, but is the direction pickup in the shifter or in the tranny? Is it possible that it could be out of line?

my friend has a 97 eclipse rs and the lights on the inside went on and off, we found out on the switch had a screw that wasnt in correctly the screw was the ground lol dumb design but we gotta work with it
