do i really need hood pins for my carbon fiber hood? some have them and some don't

You MUST have hood pins. We don't let a car leave unless they have them. Your hood WILL eventually fly up. The fiberglass latch piece won't withstand the pressure and will eventually break. Way too many hoods fly up and crack the windshield or worse. Get hood pins, or hood locks to prevent anyone from opening your hood. It looks good imo too..

i have heard a few nasty stories about carbon fiber hoods with no hood pins. Don't risk it.

Ditto I have heard some bad stories also. I wouldnt risk it and not run without them.

cool.....do does anyone have any pics of where the pins are mounted? how hard is the instalation? it scares me to drill into a 400 dollar piece of fiberglass

i just think it looks cool too. Anyone done it on non carbon hood?

I guess what u do is, find an equally spaced mounting place for them, screw them into the holes. Put some grease on the tip, let the hood touch the pins, lift up, make a nice starting point for the bit with a knife or the drill. If u are going through a frame, you will have to do it again. I think the frame near the radiator is our mounting point for pins. Right?

First drill holes in the frame where you want the hood pins, and attach them. Then you can slad a dab of bondo on the underside of the cf hood in the area where you think the hood pin will go through the hood. Now gently let the hood down. Since your hood pins are already drilled into the frame, it will make a mark in the bondo on the underside of the hood. Now you know where to drill for your hood pins...drill from under at first, then at the end, make a clean hole from above.

ok the lil myth bout CF hoods.. im no expert..

but check this.. loook at my pic.. no pins.. had the hoood 1.5 years now.. now it has flown up twice on me.. but because i did not latch it down.. first time was after a show and i just forgot cuz i layed it down so people could ohh and aahhh... second was not tolong ago.. was working on it.. and ithought i closed it..

Now if i would of HAD pins i would off had to close it.. so i will settle that arguement right now..

i just think too many people are telling you that you HAVE to have them... I would say its nice to have.but u dontt NEEEDDD THEMM so bad..

i should of got some.. but under the hood theres some lil rubber things u can take them out and mount them in there..

i also have a fiberimages hood.. strongest out there.. first time it flew up.. 2 tiny scratches on both sides of the hood.. wasnt huge at all.. couldnt reallly see..

now this last time .. it kinda messed it up big time.. 2 more lil scratches.. and it split the hood and dented it a lil on top.. not super noticeable but bad... so its time fora new hood.. it dont loook that bad.. but to me itsnot perfect so u know

but i didnt jacked up windshield.. it actually never hit it.. it just flew perpendicular to the car and stopped.. its scary having a black hood fly up on ya..


my boy had a fiberglass perdator hood that flew up and smased up his windshield.. but the hood was fine. i dont get it.. well a tiny mark on it..

well I don't have pins on mine nor does wyatt on his and I have hit speeds of 120+ and so has wyatt. and neither of us have had any issues. just make sure ur hood is closed and u shouldn't have to worry.... of course it could make a diff depending on who makes the hood u are using.

i have been quoted $400 for fiber images from a local shop and CARisma. And $350 for a VIS cf hood, $350 for Robocar hood, And $340 for a WCS hood.

Driving down the freeway today at about 80-85mph I see this guy in his 96-00 white Civic 2dr which I've seen a couple times, he's got a full Ground Designs Black Widow bodykit with the hood (BTW the scoops on HIS hood are sealed, no mesh, air CAN'T enter the engine bay, likely the reason for what happened), carbon tails, tight rims and what seems to be a dual Greddy EVO exhaust system (coulda been knock off muffs but looked good), tight car to say the least.

Anyway, were cruising side by side when this shit in a pickup truck with a 20 foot camper is going 60mph in the 2nd to fast lane, so I go around him and lose the Civic, I'm lookin' all over and a couple seconds later the Civic guy's hauling over to the right side of the freeway (4 lanes from where he was, dense traffic), with his hood sticking straight up in the air, he couldn't see a shittin' thing. I know for a fact that he doens't use hood pins and just the stock latch. Scary man, can you imagine flying down the freeway at 90 and your hood shooting straight up into your friggin' face?!?!

I didn't read the previous posts and I'm sure people told you to get pins and whatnot I just thought I should share.

Joe had one without hood pins and up flew the hood. I want one and plan on running the latch and the hood pins.

hmm i dont know what to say then.. id say pin just to be safe.. but i have driven 120 at times.. just down the highway.. 100 almost everyweekend going somewhere on the highway..and its been fine..

but i was also in a accident which kinda gave me the opp to get the cf hoood.. and we had to move the latch around some to make it close... and its a lil harder to open now. so maybe thats why mines so sturdy.. but i havent had a prob if it was latched down.

maybe it has to do with who makes the hood or what not.. some of them have the laser cut ones now..+
