105100, Leak in hatch, is there a common spot?
Posted by neonglh, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
I have some water coming into my floor of my hatch on my '98 RS. There aren't any obvious water marks on the plastics or anywhere in the hatch. On 1st gen neons, it was common for the tail lights to leak and go into the trunk.

Are there any common spots here I should look at?

Thanks!

Check ur drian holes under ur hatch. They are probably plugged up with crap take a long crew driver and stick it down each drain. That should clear the blockage .Now if that don't stop it check the rubber seal it could be cracked an ripped and letting the water run down in there.

I will do that tomorrow morning. Are they just 2 holes, one on each side, near the tail lights?

If the two drains in the channels are clogged, is likely to run down the back over the tails rather than over the top of the weatherstripping. If you have water in the bottom near the spare tire, you need to pull apart the interior trim and find out where it is coming from.

Take a hose and run it over your car with someone hanging out inside the hatch to check for leaks.

I pulled the plastics today and found that the passenger side drain hose was kinked, and not flowing. It's old and the plastic is hard now, so I am simply going to replace the hose with a new section, and it should be as good as new.

It's amazing, there is no rust in this hatch floor, even under the drivers side tail light area, where they all rust!

Another thing to look at is the hatch hinges. My spare tire well was more like a pool. I checked everything and replaced the weatherstripping around the hatch opening and had the rear window seal replaced. Everytime it would rain hard, I had water inside. Ended being a worn out hinge. The hatch would vibrate and wouldn't seal right. Just something else to look at.
