Finally found the problem. All I can say is that having a 15 year old car and being the third owner means you have to fix previous owners' shoddy work. In this case, a loom covering a loom covering really poorly spliced wires. I know, pretty half-assed and stupid. At least my car isn't a pirate anymore :)
