First off hello to all of 2gnt love this site and the tools u provide on it. I recently painted my interior for a show kind of look and i have mixed feeling about how it turned out. Id like to ask you guys to give your opinion on it. Rice or nice all comments and suggestions are welcome, thanks for looking.

Well... we could debate the light-blue color choice, but that's all down to preference. I'm not the kind of person that would paint his car neon orange/green either (wrong person to ask). I will say however that your color selection does clash extremely bad with your tan interior. Something needs to be done pronto (dye the cloth black or replace).

That aside, the bigger issue for me is the very poor tape job. Your lines are not well defined and bleed over in several places. The real skill in painting anything is not in the spray, but in the taping. You have to tape, and tape well... or all the spray in the world is still going to make it look like sh*t.

Take it from someone who knows, this is the door of *my* '99 before returning to stock for sale.



My lines were tight & crisp, and I always got a bunch of compliments... from the autobody guys on my tape job. I realize the vent/control portion of the skin is difficult, but it must be done correct or not at all.

Finally, a warning: spray many, many thin layers... AND then spray it again with several more thin layers of clearcoat (I used 5x layers of color and 3x layers of clear). Otherwise you will cry everytime a watch, ring, bracelet, shoe, or otherwise comes into contact and takes a chunk of paint with it. If you do it right, it should last you several years (mine lasted 3x years before the jewelry started to chip).

Thank you for your honest opinion and tips. I also didnt like how the blue turned out, a darker shade would have been better but the selection at autozone was pretty small lol. The taping was pretty bad i had rushed through the process. As for the tan left in the car the seats will have covers and the piece in the door will be wraped in a blue carbon fiber looking material. I might just black it all out in the future. I like how your door turned out it looks very professional, thanks again for sharing your opinon.

At least destroy a gray interior if you're gonna paint stuff. There's a million of those out there.

Like stated above, the tape lines are horrible and I can see overspray and bad blending all over the place. In some spots it looks like the paint was put on with a roller it's so thick.

Another recommendation I would give is to pick 2 colors, one main and one accent color and just use the accent color sparingly. The black/tan/blue tri-color thing you've got going just really clashes and bothers my eyes.

When My interior is done it will be completely black with a few small hints of Mopar grabber green. A few of the pieces on the dash and some stitching will be all that pops out, no major door panel bits or anything, just lots of black with a few pops of green to break it up

so you got "NOS" and tan...those two right there is automatic fail...when mixed with black. lose the tan and make it black/silver or carbon/kevlar...will look sick!!!

i painted my avenger interior and was so pissed off at myself in the long run for it. the paint was eventually chipping off and overall just looked cheap. i will never paint anything interior again.

That's generally the consensus around here. There are ways to do it right, but they take some effort.

IMO tri-color don't work. The blue is too intense, maybe a dark kind of charcoal grey might look good you could even get it with some blue pearl in it to give it a bit of flare.

I suggest you paint of all the tan stuff put on the black covers and do a few accent's on small things with a color that's not too intense.

And I suggest you use clean everything well use a primer and if you cant tape well then just take off the parts that your going to paint.
And do a few light coats and let it set between coats, than do 2 or more clear coats if the paint you got didn't have clear mixed in it.

Here's a pic way back when I had my apex, but the paint still looks the same after 3 years. I can't find the other pics but these will get you an idea I used the same color of the car to do some accent's on the interior. I will post more when I paint all the gray stuff black. I will get some of the upholstery I did to the door panels and sunroof cover.

Look's all dirty but it was when I was working with the fiber glass mount for the apex. It's just dust...

Yes, there's definately a right- and wrong-way... and the right way takes a whole lot of effort. Everything I've ever painted on the interior has lasted great even still to this day... except the doors. They *will* require to be redone every 3~4x years if you do a good job. One of the things I liked in painting the skins black, was that it matched the black in the dash perfectly. Another thing I noticed is that your job looks blotchy; so either it was still wet (unlikely), or you didn't spray even/thin-layers.

Painting an interior can either be great or crap... but nothing in-between.

Thanks again you guys for your input on my project. You guys are a great community and im thankful for the quick response. I wanted to clarify that the tan on seats and the door are not permanent but just havent been got around to as of yet because of money issues (seems to alwasy be the problem). From the feedback ive gathered from you guys and other people I will most likely be repainting mostly black with some accents. My second color choice is either going to be a darker blue or gold/bronze. I will put a picture of my car in this reply so that my color choice might make a little more sense. Sorry that the picture has been messed with a bit i cant find the original ill have to upload other onto photobucket wen i find my flash drive. Thanks again and yes the "NOS" mats will be replaced in the future i pulled them out of my first car lol. :)

I like the contrast in the blue/gold... don't see that very often. I'd probably keep the stock interior and save up your pennies for a lower ride... and then work on the inside.

Yea lowering it would be nice but the area i live in has so many potholes that it would just destory the ground effects. The interior is honestly just a small project for me i was thinkin some seat covers and some spray paint. I know that goin the cheap way might not be the best way but really wat im saving for is to turbo the car. I have already started piecing a kit together. I recently went to a car show and the reason i hadnt taken first was because of my interior. my stock interior cant really compare to the guys out there that go all out with the playstations and xboxs they put in there car with 15 different screens lol. Thanks for the compliment.

I agree with everyone about doing the accents instead and large pieces. When I painted mine, I did various accents on the dash and panels. I eventually put my interior back to the tan and black interior. As far as the color goes, the light blue is too much, maybe the color of the exterior would have been better. It would tie the whole project together.

This is a follow up of the original post. Today on fathers day i decided to repaint. I found a great color combo that i like. The color combination looks much more mature and sutle now. Id like to urge anyone that may look at this thread looking for advice on interior painting to follow some of the tips that this community has given me. The most important tip in my opinion is to "Take your time". I admit i dont have alot of patience and that the second time around i tried to finish this project in a day. Despite the fact that the color combination worked out great I had rushed throught the project and had spots that had to much paint. Up close these spots look horrible and very unproffesional. If u do plan on doing an interior I recommend that you take a weekend to get it done so that ur not in a rush and to put thin layers of paint on so that u dont get lumps of paint like I did.
