I recently purchased another vehicle for pretty cheap. It's was more/less an opportunity I felt I couldn't pass up. A 92 240sx SE convertible. It has a little bit of rust behind the rear tires...no big deal.
Upon further inspection...the rear section of the floor pan (driver's side) has practically rusted through. A fairly decent size-maybe 12"x6"?? The subframe part is still good but the other stuff is pretty much going to have to be replaced-between the door jam and the subframe.
I'll get pictures up soon.It looks scary!!

My question is...if someone were to replace it...would it be easier to just use another floor pan section from a donor or cut out the rear half and use new 22ga. sheet metal?? As it is now..I wouldn't feel safe driving it unless it were to be relaced.

I know it's somewhat hard to give any type of info without pictures...but general knowledge/advice is what I'm after. This isn't a car that will be driven anytime soon either.

If it were me, I wouldnt replace it with another donor floor section because if yours rusted, that piece probably will too.

I personally would cut out the shitty pieces and weld in new 18-20gauge SS.

+1 Cut out the rust and replace with new metal.

Is it critical for the metal to have the different grooves/ridges or can I just make it a flat section??

Is there anything that attaches to the rusted areas? look at it carefully and make sure that there's nothing that needs to be different than just flat.

If the donor car you're cutting from has non-cancerous/non-rusted metal, you will be fine using that method. We did this on a 73 Porsche 914 which are notorious for rust and the job has held up for years. Just make sure you sandblast the donor or otherwise strip it down to the metal and properly prep and paint every square inch after welding it in.

+2 with just cutting it out and welding in sheet metal rather then useing another piece for a donor car, i had rust probles with a 85 zt i bought, and pending on where its at and the shape, its easier to cut sheet metal to fit to weld, then it is trying to cut a donor car and get the peace to fit right most of the time, or this is with my expereience

I got a huge 3' x 3' sheet of 18ga. today. I love work sometimes.

The area its in is only the flat surface, I dont believe it goes much beyond that. I will have to strip the paint down and shoot the rest of the metal to find out. Outside of sandblasting...is there any other way to strip the rusted parts down?

Great find 240 convert. thats rare.

I recommend for you to pick the new Project Car issue. They have 1990 240 S13 on cover, they built a mild drift beast under 4k with the stock KA motor shortram stated the degree # and what sensor they pulled to do the advance timing BTDC, plus they gave steps info for parts for the Auto- five speed swap.

:bowdown Thanks for the heads up on the mag. That mag always has some good stuff in it. I haven't decided what exactly I am wanting to do with the car...I just couldn't pass up the deal! I am def. wanting to do the 5spd swap though.

I'm still waiting to get some good pics too. It's in the garage right now.
