I just got a white stock hood for $50 and it's in almost perfect condition, (I almost don't want to repaint it) But, my car is black. So, what are the steps I should take to sand down the white and just primer is black. I just don't know how much to sand off of the old paint/primer, or what grits to sand it with and when. I was going to just use the Duplicolor Auto Spray cans and then get it painted this summer when I get the money.

400-600 grit should be fine.

No. If your repainting over a exhisting clear coat/color, wet sand the hood down with 800. Then hit it with some primer, and then you can wet sand the primer with 1200-1500 and you can either rock the hood with primer like that, or you can spray over that.

I deffinately would not use rattle can though. It looks like shit, even the primer.

The problem with dry sanding something that has exhisting paint on it, that you plan on painting over, is that sometimes the new paint or primer can have reactions to that type of base and cause bubbling or other types of paint reactions.

Stick to the wet sanding.

Wait, ive always been told 400-600 for a primer job. Even in autobody class.

You paint stuff, but shes not talking about a good looking hood, she is primering it like a 16yo kid would.

400-600 IMO.

Also, IMO just get it painted or leave your current one. Its not that much.

Lol, I already put it on my car to see what it would look like, too different for me :P I wet sanded the hood with 600 grit to get rid of rock chips, scratches, etc. I am going to use Duplicolors black primer just until winter is over and then get it professionally painted black to match my car. I'm not trying to get a carbon fiber look to it, just trying to get it to match my car somewhat. I had a carbon fiber hood on it, but it got totally f*cked up along with my front bumper by a truck on the freeway. So, I will be priming it and then sanding with 1200 and see if that works out. Thanks for the help.

Hey, how important is it to sand all the way down to bare metal when using bondo? If I just sanded down to the primer and then put the bondo on that, would that be okay?

I agree, especially if you were trying to match in gloss. If you use spray cans, make sure you use the gun attachment they make for interior trim painting, you will get a much more accurate stroke.

IMO, throw it on your car, take it to Maaco, talk to the manager and try to work a deal on a cheapo match job, pull the hood and come back for it. The economy sucks dude
