I have seen a few creative placement areas for the Zeitronix 02 display but I always liked the way guys mounted there Apex boxes in the center vents. So I decided to design a bezel to mount my 02 display in. I just didn’t like the aluminum case that the o2 display comes in and mounting it someplace with double sided tape just isn’t clean looking.

I designed it in solid works and had it built using an FDM machine (Fused Deposition Modeling) For those who don’t know what that is it is a rapid prototyping machine that builds plastic prototype parts much like stereolithography but not as expensive. < for those who don’t know what that is www.google.com

I still have to sand it and paint it but you get the idea from the pics.

Thats pretty bad ass. I kinda want to keep my center vents though. I'm about to get the zt-2.

Looks awesome! probably better suited to the interior/exterior section.

what's it run to produce something like that? I'd be interested in keeping the vents but maybe having some nice non hacked looking switch locations

Agreed, although good for the non DD I'd say. Which I guess my car now is. But that's ok I don't use the display for the RS just the Evo

And Thanx for the tip on FDM machines...never heard of that before. I want one :P Is the end product stronger than one that comes from a stereolith?

The end product isn’t “super” strong but works well for an aesthetic part. The end product out of an fdm vs stereolithography would be more likely to break (or weaker) because it is constructed in cross sections that are laid down on top of one another. These layers are just a mechanical bond and parts that break do so at one of the millions of layers (low shear strenght). Stereolithography parts are built in the same layering technique but plastic isn’t added to the part it is hardened to the part as the laser passes over the resin. Nether produce a ready for consumer part, they are tools used to quickly produce a prototype to be used for testing, evaluation, and refinement studies.

so basically it's a good piece to make a fiberglass mold off of?

I wish I owned one. They start at around 40k and go up from there. Stereolithography machines start at 1/4 million and go up from there.

I only made the one. It would cost too much to make them in quantity and too long to make them. This one was in the machine for 27 hours and cost 127.00. It would also take forever to make a dozen plus the machine would get back logged. This was just a side project when there weren’t any other projects taking up the machine.

Im an industrial designer so we have stuff prototyped using some of these methods. Its just one of my many tools that we have at our disposal.

Why don't you route a positive relief in a block of phenolic or foam on a CNC? It'd only take an hour or two that way. Then make a silicone mold and pour resin to make production pieces. Just a thought since everyone seems to be interested...

What material is it?
Most FDM machines can make the part in ABS or ABS/PC which is typically 80% of the strength of the real injection molded part.
I've gotten samples/parts made that you almost cannot tell if its been molded or 3dprinted.

FDM = as close to the real part as you can get without a mold

Stereolithography = brittle junk for looks only basically (drop it from 1 foot and watch it shatter/crack into pieces)
