102002, urathane Vs. fiberglass
Posted by a1eyed1der, Feb-21-02 12:12 PM
Hi everyone question i am ordering my body kit tonight and i have the option of upgrading my front bumper for an additional fee to urathanc, i have heard that the fiberglass will crack very easily even if you bottom out or hit a curb is it def. worth the extra money to get the urathane bumper? please respond, also is it the same process painting the urathane as the fiberglass

this is a long battle lol, I personally recommend Fiber, if it breaks, easily fixed, if it doesn't fit properly, easily modded to do so.

i heard that urethane doesnt fit properly and it is harder to custom fit than fiberglass. no kit will fit perfectly, but i think that urethane would be harder than fiberglass

OY, fiberglass is the all around best way to go for many reasons: if it don't fit perfectly it can be fitted (easily enough), urethane is harder if not impossible; if it cracks it can be fixed, I think urethane can be repaired also but it's hard to make it turn out looking right and cracks again soon after (as far as I know they use fiberglass to fix the cracks and since urethane flexes and fiberglass doesn't, it cracks again); painting fiberglass would be cheaper seeing as how the paint they use doesn't NEED to be able to flex a whole lot, whereas a urethane bumper needs to be painted with a high quality flexible paint; also note that urethane CAN crack/tear/rip, just because it's flexible doesn't mean it's not gonna get damaged and if you get a high quality kit that is made of thick multilayered fiberglass, it won't crack when you graze a curb or bottom out. Only shitty quality, paperthin fiberglass kits crack if you bump something with it. Fiberglass is cheaper and the way to go.

my 2 cents

Fiberglass because it can be customized and fixed relatively easily, and costs about half of the cost of a urethane body kit. If urethane doesn't fit, you can't modify it at all. Paint also goes onto fiberglass a lot better, but fiberglass is not flexible so if you hit it, it will crack. It's all a compromise, but I vote fiberglass.

I'm going to put this into "Things we've already seen".

Deja vu?
do we have somthing about this in the "things weve seen before section?" if not then we need it if we do... sorry I didn't look before askin. not tryin to be an ass but this has been asked a million times.

so to answer ur question.... its all a matter of preferance.

urethane is stronger and is harder to break, rip, or crack. BUT if the fitment isn't good then ur pretty screwed, and if it cracks rips or breaks then ur screwed. mainly because its hard to repair or change. also it has to be painted with paint that has a flex agent, cause urethane moves and will possibly spiderweb. and u need all the regular supports on because urethane tends to sag.

Fiberglass is stronger easy to shape change and mold. which is good incase the fitment isn't good,(which it wont be.) or if u crack it(which you will.) and you want to repair it. also fiberglass paints better than urethane. u will most likely have to lose the bumper reinforcment cuase it wont fit... but hey.... its weight reduction.....

so thats basiclly it, if I missed anything just add it. and if I repeated anything.... sorry I didn't read the follow up post.

alright i had the fiberglass blitz kit and some drunk hit my car from behind(in a parking space) and the insurance told me i could get any bumper within their price range and i ordered urethane. I got the front and back bumper. The body shop guys told me they where glad it was urethan it would be easier to flex to put it on. Anywayz i'm happy with my urethane.

I would spend the extra. I have put together alot of cars with fiberglass and its no fun at all. They say it breaks easily it does i hit a snowbuger(i live in mn) and it cracked my front end on my cougar with a dragon z kit. Plus fiberglass the paint will chip realy easily and is way harder to prep so spend your money you get what you pay for in a body kit..
