100477, So I took up powdercoating...
Posted by fasterimage, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
So back in November, I took up powdercoating. I started with some metal things I had laying around and then started to Do a few things on my car. I really like the finish I get now....It took a lil while to ge the hang of it but I'm starting to get pretty good, haha. My friends are bringin me some of there car parts to start coating. I have spent a good 1200-1500 on supplies to have everything I need, but It's definetly a fun hobby. Imma Post up some pics of the things I started powdercoating On my car. Anyone else on here try powdercoating?

I have been practicing with my powdercoating system. So, today I thought I'd coat the wipers on my Wife's Nissan.

These are done with Black Texture--

Here is a speed square I hit with full gloss black--look how it gets into the details--

Here are some brackets & things im doing for a friend, this pic is how I got them---

Here they are Blasted and ready for coating--

And finally here they are Blinged up in in silver, and the other 2 pieces in black--

If anyone takes a liking to this thread, I'll post up more pics of things I do when im bored with this hobby.

I dont know how this board will tolerate it. But I'd be willing to Powdercoat some stuff for people...I dont have any huge oven or anything, just small things. Help yall out with your cars, it's just my hobby. I'll shoot you a pm. thanks for the props though!

My buddy and i just started painting. Got an "alright" compressor and some generic paint so get the feel for it. I guess powdercoating would be fun to learn.

Seems to look a little better on most things. Hell, even then you could do your IC piping. stuff looks great though!

thanks for the kind words. The one thing I can tell you about powdercoating is, You can just watch your electric Bill Soar, My wife loves me. My first month, I upped the Bill a lil over $100 bucks over normal. And Im on a better pace yet this month! hehe, Im glad "she" loves me!

Ah so you have the kit or the setup where you use a spare residential oven to do it? Or did you buy a commercial oven? I have thought about it too but I dont want to setup an oven in the garage and sticking the parts in my regualr oven wouldnt go over too well ;)
100486, RE: So I took up powdercoating...
Posted by fasterimage, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
No you Definetly dont wanna put it in your oven you eat out of, Cuz It destroys an oven. My first household oven lasted about 2 weeks, and I bought a Commercial oven from a restraunt auction a little bit bigger, and am currently using that. For a hobby I dont think I will be buying a $20,000 PC oven anytime soon. It's fun, I thought i could get started for $1000 and was like okay awesome, and I should have kept all my reciepts, but I have reciepts for about $1500 of it now, but I know I have passed that as well. And on a side note, dont use a gas oven, as Powder is HIGHLY flammable!

So I am running out of stuff to powdercoat...Maybe someone on here can start sending me stuff. Well anywayz there I was the other night, I had to take a Crap, so I got done and was washing my hands and noticed the faucet chrome was starting to peel.....Hmmmmmm

so here you go faucet before....

and my new faucet in black to match the grout, lol....

Glad to see so many people responding....makes me think I really am doing a good job.

Man thats great. Eh, in terms of other hobbies, you picked a cheap one. Think about it...its a bit costly up front but you can easily do it and enjoy it while you make a few bucks at the same time.

beats my 15k hobby of skydiving that keeps costing me money...lol
100489, RE: So I took up powdercoating...
Posted by fasterimage, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Yeah, Compared to yours it's cheap. But I dont get the thrill you get. I just get a few hours of work, and a house that starting to look like a 5 year old colored it. I have since done all the cabinet handles in red....haha, my wife is not home. I'll pose her reply later, if im still alive, I think next I will do all the door knobs. in like blue or something. im running out of metal to PC.
100490, RE: So I took up powdercoating...
Posted by fasterimage, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
But, I just thought of the bright side, if she hates what I have done that means a trip to lowes for her new stuff, to fix what I PC'd but for me that means tool shopping. haha
100491, RE: So I took up powdercoating...
Posted by fasterimage, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
A friend of mine has a Ford ranger that is lifted that he takes to car and truck shows. He ordered a Rockcrusher Diff cover for it and it came cast with no color, and asked me to do it red to clean it up and match his truck....He is coming tonite to pick it up. I decided to make the rockcrusher label and the lines look more clean and a sweet finish, I really hope he likes it. Tell me what you guys think...Lucky yall can see it before he sees his own piece.

The flash from the camera makes it look not smooth, but it is...it has no flaws....dang flash.
100494, RE: So I took up powdercoating...

Lookin' good!

Also an input on the whole lowes shopping trip. Theres your more metal, lol. Just another color to try.

thanks, ehhh...I dont just want to coat metal to coat it.....I like coating stuff that gets put to use....Other wise I'd by 10' poles and cut them into 6" sections and go to town. Build me a little tube village. But that gives me an Idea that my Coat hangers would look nice if they were colored.....Wonder what my wifes take on that would be....welp....time to take a gander through the house.

Also I pm'ed you about you needing more parts.
100501, RE: So I took up powdercoating...
Posted by ramsey95ESi, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Or you could start a donation thingy. Just have people donate their scrap but still useful parts.

I would donate, see what things would look like with a good powdercoat on them.

nice work!
can you fit a valve cover in your oven?
and do you have a web address to your color chart?
100503, RE: So I took up powdercoating...
Posted by fasterimage, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
I'll take part donations to be coated...haha. then I'll list them on the site for dirt cheap to cover my powder costs. But I dont have a website, Im a hobbiest, that maybe if this goes well maybe a business. But I am cutting up some diamondplate today to make for a sample for each color....I will post them when I am done, a few people wanna see some colors on here for some parts they want done. Thanks for all the replies guys you guys are awesome.

PS- I'm on a break rite now...My blast cabinet started leaking glass out of it, So I am siliconing it up so where it bolted together stops leaking.
100504, RE: So I took up powdercoating...
Posted by fasterimage, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
foggy- yes I can fit a Valve Cover, I went to the junkyard today and got one to strip and Do to see how well it turns out....Right now, im on hold mode till tomorrow, I had to go buy a new oven...Mine quit....now on #3, One commnercial & 1 Household oven...Neither lasted long when doing this PC stuff. I'll post pics when I finish my first valve cover.

Anywayz, I decided to try out my Chrome and see how "acutal chrome" it looks....I was a little surprise, I figured for more of a silver. Leave me some feedback on what you think, and ofcourse I let the raised letters aluminum finish, with no coating.

Great job, was wondering what are your rates I don't know any place in my town that does powerdcoating I live in Stark County Ohio, but there's alot of machine shops. I'm sure there is a place here, not of the where abouts. In the near future I would to have mine done in red I keeping my stock VC as a backup in case something happends like crack VC near the bolts

I bought a 420A valve cover with raised letters & a ECU tray from another member off his parts car, and got them today in the mail. Once I get caught up from the stuff I have to do no, I will clean them, strip them, and Coat them. Anyone looking for a raised letter VC or ECU tray in a certain color....before I just randomly spray it any color? If no respone By time I start, The tray I will probably Do in Chrome, and the VC in Candy Blue or Candy Red with polished letters.

Yes, All of my Candy coats, are done over a metallic Silver base coat...hence the Stage 2 paint category.

On a side note, I just ordered a new Candy Blue color called Candy Blue Lollypop, It's a real shiny Darker blue. I'll do something as soon as it arrives.

Infrared lights cook somthing at 410 degrees? I thout infrared lights typically only put out 160, I couldnt image being in the same room trying to turn the lights off when its done baking, can we say self baking

I believe it was in a large autoclave oven. might have been infrared but it would have taken a ton of lights because the whole interior, underbody and cage is also powdercoated.
