This is the first whole day my friend has owned the car and I think it has crankwalk. Here is what happened:

He said he drove to his friends house, when he got there he pushed in the clutch and the car died
Everytime he came to a stop and was in 1st gear and pushed in the clutch the car died
Driving down the highway, all of the sudden the car started to overheat and when they pulled up an onramp the car died
There was smoke coming from under the hood
They said the coolant was boiling
The car will not turn over, We tried and it started clanging really bad
It is leaking oil, from where we dont know yet
Driving down the highway he said he lost all power, it wouldnt go over 70

At first I thought maybe the thermostat got stuck and the engine overheated and warped the head but since it wont start up and is making that weird banging/clanking sound in the engine Im not so sure...please help me to diagnose the problem. It was running fine last night.

Oh, he paid $1800 for it 95 TSI AWD with 134K miles. He didnt even know it was AWD till I told him today.

doesnt crankwalk make a loud noise or something? does the crank move in and out? id do a compression test,maybe a cracked head/bad headgasket, hole in the block by chance?

Crankwalk test 101:
Take left corner, push in clutch. Does it:
A). stick to floor
B). Die

If you answered A, you could very welll be walking
If you answered B, you have some other MAJOR issues.

The only REAL way to test is to measure the play...

It does sound like the car has some major issues and I think your diagnosis of over heating could very well be true.
He just bought the car correct? Take that POS back...

After re-reading your post, it sounds to me like he has no oil or is SERIOUSLY low. :-o
Tell him to start shopping for a 6-bolt longblock ASAP.

My car does "B" occasionally and I'm pretty sure its just a vac leak somewhere that i'm having trouble finding....not to hijack a thread, but what "major issues" are you talking about?!? :scratch


as for crankwalk, It really doesnt soudn like it at all, but it does sound like the car was not in selling condition when he bought it. Don't mention the "c" word just yet-

What kind of clutch does it have? is it noticably a 2600?

The occasional stalling would not be anything severe. Prolly just a vac leak like you said.
MAJOR issues with the other car could be warped heat, blown HG and IF he did run it out of oil as I suspect,(could've also been the previous owner) he's looking at all kinds of damage depending on how/how long/how hard the car was driven like that.

did he by chance do a carfax on it? if not im sure someone could of hooked him up :D

CarFax's only show registration info and insurance claims. If he did something to it and never claimed it, it won't show up.

there was oil in it, we checked and oil showed up to the minimum line on the dipstick so it had enough oil to run...the only thing is is that we cannot test any of that because the car will not turn over...

the previous owners showed up because he called them and they said it has a new thermostat. Also, they went from $2500 and went down to $1800 so they were thinking maybe something was wrong already that they werent telling them about. They told me they drive the car 100 miles every day and that it makes monthly trips down to mexico. I just dont understand why the car would keep dying even if it overheated. Wouldnt the car still run even if the head was warped?

We are looking for a 6-bolt long block right now.

Sounds like a headgasket problem... Starved the car with oil and spun a bearing.

Crankwalk is over rated imo anyway...

will the 6-bolt motor go right in? Will he need a different computer from a 1g?


edit: I see I will have to buy other stuff to make the motor fit, what is that?

yes it will go in. Gotta swap a few things around but its basically a direct swap. You have to file down a motor mount. Yes the 2g ecu will work.

You will get random misfire codes so I would start investing into dsmlink if i were you.

how do you associate CW with a overheating problem? Boiling coolant usually indicates a HG problem or something related to it. I think George is right on this one. I just love when people jump the gun and blame CW for everything......

I only blamed it cause it would die everytime the clutch was pressed in, and considering the clutch indication...also, it would not turn over and was making a terrible clanging noise. I originally thought overheating but when I got there and found that stuff out it seemed like something different. I just didnt understand how it would overheat...
