9354, Is this a good deal on a built block
Posted by JReynosa, Nov-30-04 05:44 PM
This is the ad: it is a 4g63 6 bolt motor with .020 over CP pistons 9.1:1 compression ratio, and eagle rods all balanced by action machine, and has all new topline rod and main bearings also has all new anti-detonation CP rings, the same setup that made me almost 700hp to the ground with nitrous and 594hp, reving to 9000rpm all day long. i am trying to get $1600.

I dont really need a block but this sounds like a good deal. What other questions should I ask about it?

Ummm your right.

It sounds like an awesome deal.

But to say "spins 9000 rpm all day" is kinda pushing it. i think.

but shit. it's a 6 bolt. they do magical things. :P

Well the block really has nothing to do with the 9k rpm redline (well it does, since you need a tough bottom end to hold power and other things associated with a high rev engine). The head and valvetrain has basically everything to do with redline.

9.1:1 compression will be a bitch to tune and the Eagle rods are rated to about ~5-600 hp (he throws out 700 like it's a boost gauge mod or something), not 700 like the smoke he is blowing. CP pistons aren't really that common in our platform as far as I could tell when I was researching my built engine (I went with Wiseco pistons, 8.3:1). Also, what is his real HP number? 594? 700? I can't pick out his facts there.

Also, topline bearings are pretty shitty if you're building a bulletproof bottom end. They fail quite often and are discouraged heavily by the DSM community in building a forged bottom end. Stock rebuild, they are OK, but skipping Clevite bearings is another red flag.

I'm not really sold on that guy's add since he is kinda exaggerating about everything.

thanks for helping me out. I think im going to pass on it.

why did you choose wiseco pistons over j.e.'s?

and are eagle rods really worth it? dont the big 1g rods hold just as much power? hmmmmm...

/end hijack.

Because Wiseco, as far as I could tell, have significantly less issues with slap and uneven wear than do the J.E.'s. Wiseco, not just in the DSM world, but in most of the car cultures I have come across is so highly regarded that it is hard to go with anything else (as I saw it, plus my machine shop absolutely swears by Wiseco). They generally don't expand as much and prevent more oil blow-through than do the J.E.s

Eagle rods hold much more power than do 1g bog rods (about 25% more) and are generally good enough for 95% of people's power plans. Beyond Eagle are Manley (which I went with, rated to ~850 hp, and these are fairly new on the DSM scene, but Manley is a top of the line domestic component maker with unparalled reputation), Carillo (rated to ~850 hp) and of course Crower (rated to ~800 hp) and some others (GRP ad such).

For a good spread of info on engine components, andd a good variety, go to www.slowboyracing.com. They have the largest selection of engine products I have seen on a DSM site.

Prepping to fully build an engine was a huge endeavour, and I spent hours upon hours going over these things. I think I came up with a pretty good combo, although I was one of the first five people out there to use Manley rods in a DSM (they collaborated directly with SlowBoy to make race rods for DSMs). Over time I'll be able to tell for sure just how good they are, but so far, I couldn't be happier with everything.

CP pistons are fine. Eagle rods are also fine. Eagle rods are used in high hp applications all the time. Chances are you won't be reaching the 700hp mark anyway. Very few DSMs ever do.

I agree those aren't the best bearings for the application. Clevite are known and trusted.

JE pistons have a history of problems with the 4G63. They have been known to cause premature wear in many cases. As a result they are rarely used. All of the big boys in the DSM world use either Wiseco, Ross, etc.

1g big rods are bigger than the later smaller rods, but that doesn't mean they can handle as much power as forged. The hp limit on the big rods is around 450. After that it is time to go with forged.
