9165, Turbo Upgrade Posted by deuce, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
I have a stock turbo on my 1997 GS-T
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7945067156&sspagename=ADME%3AB%3ADS%3AUS%3A28
Is this a good upgrade?
Thanks

When it comes to upgrading your turbo, it is never, ever a good idea to buy one used. Especially off Ebay where they say it came off a "used engine with 35,000 miles." Turbos are serious shit. If you are planning on upgrading your turbo, do it right the first time and buy something brand new. That way you know it won't fall apart in 500 miles.
But yes, that is a small 16G turbo which most likely came off an Evo engine. That is a good upgrade, but if you are going to be upgrading your turbo do it with a new one. There are better turbos out there anyway.

Ok that sounds good, in terms of HP gains, let me tell you what I have:
First of all its a 1997 GS-T with 37k miles. Mods:
1. 3 inch cat back apexi n1 2. walbro 190 fuel pump 3. apexi afc controller 4. MBC 5. Greddy type-s bov 6. greddy upper and lower IC pipes 7. tuned by motec performance
I'm running at around 15 psi....prob less cuz of the boost creep.
I'm looking for a decent gain without going crazy in the $$$.
Would you recommend a small 16g TDO5 or like a direct swap with a T-28?
Thanks Jeff

You are going to want to get bigger injectors with a larger turbo. It is really amazing what more fuel does for the engine. My college roommate was stuck in the low 13s on a Big16G with stock injectors. Once he put 660's in he hit low 12s.
Having said that, you will need 550 injectors at least. A small 16G turbo is a fine upgrade, as is the BigT-28. With the 16g series turbos you will need a $200 install kit from RRE.
You are also going to want a 2.5" downpipe and either a 3" hi-flow cat or test pipe. Upgrading the whole exhaust helps so much with a larger turbo.
You will also want to upgrade your intercooler as well. The stock one heatsoaks on the stock turbo. Imagine what a 16G could do to it.
Basically, a turbo upgrade should be the last thing you do. All of the other supporting mods should be taken care of before upgrading the turbo. You might be able to get away with a small 16G on the stock intercooler and fuel system for a little while, but don't push the boost over 15psi. When you upgrade the fuel system and intercooler you will be able to see 18-19psi daily.

very interesting, that sounds good.
Now as for the FMIC, since I have greddy upper and lower piping...can I use them with the new FMIC or no. what would you recommend FMIC wise?
thanks again

The IC has the piping routed to the stock locations. A T-28 will bolt right on and you'll see a definite increase in power but for the money, I'd go with an EVOIII 16G. Yes, you'll need to spend an extra $200 on an install kit but the turbo will take you ALOT further. I was really thinking about going the T-28 route myself but after alot of research went with the EVOIII and I feel I made the right choice.

I am a hater. I fear your 420a turbo. I am mad you have a 3065. My car is slow. You are faster than I can ever be.
There I said it. :thumbsup

Well on an FWD, street driven car, the GT turbo will basically make traction a non existant entity. It wouldn't make sense to get a turbo that big for a FWD vehicle is all.
As to the 3065 part, I don't know.

yeah i'm EVOIII16g at 18psi and i have SERIOUS traction issues. Anything larger or faster spooling would be just wasted until 4th or 5th.

S16G imo. I drove Dan's GSX last night on 20 psi and nearly pissed myself.

always be wary when buying a turbo off ebay because u may never know what condition its in. u could get it and it needs a rebuild, etc. and that would suck to waste ur $$$ on.

My situation is different. I don't understand why you are comparing my drag car to a street driven car. I drive my 1g GSX on a daily basis and don't want to put a huge turbo on it. Why did you even bring up my situation? I should of been more specific and told him that the FP-28 would be a better choice (Garrett GT internals) As far as traction is concerned that what Slicks are for...

Don't listen to them bro....I am glad you are daring to be different. If people like yourself did not exist, we all have the same car with the same mods.
I remember there was a time when 20g turbos were considered to big to drive on the street....lol.

You're right I don't have the first clue about your situation. I was merely trying to answer your question as to why someone else responded the way they did. You asked a question that wasn't answered and I attempted to answer it.
Also, since I have zero background information on your plans or anything, I made a conclusion based on the info at hand. To clarify: Your daily drive your AWD 1g and will race your FWD 2g? If that's true, then great. I personally would choose the exact opposite because I have seen how difficult traction issues are on FWD cars. Given the choice between the two, I'd drag the AWD and daily drive the FWD. That's my opinion with no judgement placed on it.
I don't care if you got pissed at me for answering how I did. I actually was answering in a civilized non biased way that asserted my opinion. Sorry you took it as a personal slight or insult.
Good luck with your project and I always respect some innovation or breaking away from the norm. I hope you find your FWD project infinitely rewarding and not a massive burden both financially and emotionally. Enjoy it. It's too much fun to take too seriously.

Depends on how you define hood. Actually no. You're right. No hood for me in the sticks. Just barns and grass and farm animals.
