9086, Engine Issues

I test drove a car tonight which had engine issues. He fired it up and there sounded like a tick or a metal to metal contact going on in the engine, it was louder anything I've heard come from a 4 cyl engine. Sounded like the head, but then I got down and it sounded like the block (it was a cramped garage). It was an automatic, so we put it in reverse and it stalled. Infact it stalled every time we came to a stop. I hooked up an OBD II code reader, no codes showed up. Sounds like crankwalk, but I want to get it from the guys that know what they're talking about.

make, model, year?...

which may not be important, but why even buy it if it has problems that you know are going to cost alot?(either transmission or engine). it must be extremely cheap if you're considering buying it to fix it up. which, does it even matter if it has crankwalk if you have to spend the money to fix it anyways?

why is it that whenever there's a noise/issue that someone can't explain right off the top of their head, it's just GOTTA be crankwalk? :rolleyes
You do realize how EXTREMELY rare it is for an A/T DSM to get CW, yes? I think there has been like 2 reported cases EVER.
We're going to need more details...
Are there any other things you noticed? What was it idling at? When you shifted into reverse, did it shift smooth? Did it engage smooth?Did it engage before it stalled? Have you ever heard a DSM with a moderate case of lifter tick? Was the sound like that or different?

Duh, it HAS to be crankwalk sillies.

If it came from the block it could be the rods 'a knocking. Among countless other things. More info is needed.

Well you could have some bent valves or thrown a rod. There is a scope you can buy to listen to the motor to find out exactly where the knock is coming from. Also do a compression test.

Sounds like it threw a bearing. not worth it IMO

why buy a scope? non-processed woods from broomsticks, shovels, etc are great for listening to engine noises. Just stick one end against the tranny--listen---then the block---listen. You'd be surprised how effective/cheap this is, and in my experience, its easier to use a broomstick to get to hard places than paying for an "engine stethoscope" that has no reach.

Well I have to tell you guys, I was gonna buy thing nomatter. It's EXTREMELY cheap. The guy states that the timing belt went. Had to fix valves and other things on the head. Turbo went out at this time. Although I saw that the turbo was replaced, I didn't see any valve work done on the recipt. Guy says that the crankshaft, rods, and bearings need to be replaced. He doesn't know jack about the car. It was put in reverse and put the gas in. Started to roll backwards when it died. I have never ever heard a ticking sound as loud and as prominent in an engine before.

As for finding a Cyclone (6 bolt) engine - anyone know where else I can find one besides: totaljdm.com, flashoptions.com, Nippon Motors Inc, Automotive Advantage, or Japanese Engine Imports? I'd like AWD manual tranny, ECU, and sensors to be included, although I know that not all companies do this. Any help at all is always welcome.

Oh yeah, it's a 95 GSX. No performance mods at all.

WTF ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT ?
When it comes to my motor I would rather use the PROPER tools. Not some generic broom stick. Geezz you cant be serious.

It's actually not a bad way to do it to get a preliminary idea. Sound tansfers through the solid medium quite well and is very effective. Obviously not as good as the stethoscope but effective nonetheless. I think a compromise of both POVs would be a good solution.

Also, doing an A/T-M/T swap plus the 7 bolt-6 bolt swap. You are a brave and/or optimistic man. You've got a SHITLOAD of work ahead of you to do that. A/T is butt fast with a shift kit, so maybe staying A/T will cut down massive amounts of cost and headache for you.

You should have told us the whole story right off the bat.
95 GSX huh?
I'd leave the drivetrain alone and swap the motor. It's going to be a big ol pain in the ass. It's not as simple as swapping engine and tranny as the A/T's use different gearing in the rearend. I don't know if A/T also came with an EEPROM but if you want to swap in an ECU from a M/T, be prepared to spend about $200 just on the ECU.
If I were you, I'd just swap the motor and then start modding...

100% agreed... Major PITA to swap the tranny along with the motor. :shrug

I am well aware that it would take some doing to switch to a stick. However, I'll have the time and I'll have the money to do it. I'm trying to get ahold of totaljdm (not sure) and automotive advantage (includes everything that I want above). Nomatter what, it's not a simple weekend project. It will take time, money, and effort. In the end I'll have what I want. So what's everyone's diagnosis? Crankwalk or not?

How can we say for sure when the only symptom you've given us is a loud "ticking". :scratch
There's no real way to say for sure without tearing it apart and measuring the clearence since it's not a 5 speed.
Plus, CW A/T's are so rare, it's not even funny.
If you ask me, the ticking is something in the head thats thrashed from the timing belt episode...
