8040, How Accurate is DSM Link?

Just curious how accurate DSMLink is on your estimated horsepower? We did a few pulls tonight in my buddies Talon. It's not tuned yet, so he was just out messing with some A/F and such.

Its not accurate at all. I would go by airflow if anything to gauge how much power you are making. The rough estimate is 10hp for every 1lb/min of air. That is a better gauge of how much power you are making....its not dead on by any means, but its much better then the HP calculation routine.

There is a way to make that more accurate, but you would have to search through the Link archives on the board to figure that out.

Thanks for the help. We're still not sure how much power its putting out. Last year when we actually went to the dyno and had it tuned, it made around 320 to the wheels and ran 11.96 @ 108. That was on a totally different setup though. He went much bigger over the winter, we're curious to see what its going to do. DSM Link said 609hp yesterday, we know it isnt that much but it's pretty damn strong.

the HP and TQ numbers on DSMLink are very misleading, and always different. I did a few pulls on the same road, and from 3 different pulls, i had 3 totally different HP numbers.

First run: 169hp, 192tq (lbs: 32.4)
Second run: 291hp, 287tq (lbs: 32.8)
Third run: 263hp, 267tq (lbs: 31.8)

So, as you can see, i was running about 32lbs/min on every run, but my HP/TQ numbers were completly different.

EDIT: also, if you go into the HP/TQ Properties, you can set the vehicle weight, tire width, etc etc, to try and make them more accurate. I set the props for 15% drivetrain loss, 18inch wheels, 3100lbs, etc. My numbers were the ones posted above, and as you can see, still werent accurate.

Yup, agreed, not very accurate. I have always gotten different numbers, but my personal favorite is 425 HP and approx 500 ft/lbs of torque.

I wish.

go buy ariflow...to get an estimate......aiflow(lb/min) x 10 = a more realistic HP number. It will vary depending on tune, but that can sort of give you a base of what you are making.

How do you look at that number??? What value is that I need to turn on???

Assuming you have version 2.5, just log AirFlow under display and values. This will also tell you if you are maxing out your turbo sort to speak.

Okay, mister almight DSMlinker, how do I tell if I'm maxing out my turbo????

Damn I wish I knew as much about this program as you.

Which turbo do you have.......compare airflow numbers to what your turbo is rated at......

small 16g = 34lb/min
Big 16g = 36lb/min
Evo 16g = 44lb/min

With the right combination of mods, you can achieve these flow rates. General ways to increase airflow include turning up the boost, cams, portwork/headwork on the head(this depends on turbo itself) and Sheet Metal Intake Manifold. That is not in any kind of order by the way.

dont forget to go into Airflow properties and switch it to "lbs/min"

Just thought I'd let you guys know, he's still been messing around with it and its running a little better.

He did a couple more pulls just the other night, it said 63lb/min.

Just curious, whats his setup? Thats alot of flow for it being untuned.

I just noticed this

11.96 @ 108

How do you run 11.9@108mph? How much does this car weigh?

I just asked him this the other day and I cannot remember, I believe around 2900lbs. That time was last year on a totally different setup. It was done at Indianapolis Raceway Park. All the guys there said that it was the lowest trap that have seen for the time. Actually, here is his cardomain page that hasnt been updated since that run.

http://www.cardomain.com/ride/650541

His current setup is completely different. Here is the majority of what I found:

Sheperd built motor w/Ross pistons, Eagle rods, Cleivete bearings, all arp studs, bal shafts elim.,bal. blue printed, knife edged cryoed crank, ported polished head, ss valves, crower springs titanium ret.,hks 264i 272 e cams, cometic mls h.g.arp head studs.shepeherd race spec tranny w/ 4 spider center diff.,act 2600 clutch with fidanza alum. flywheel,t3/t04e 60-1 turbo, fic 650 ccs, walbro 255,frh intake mani, aem ems with 3.5 map eugo wide band o2,.3" turbo back exhaust, toyo ra1 tires,4 bolt rear, eibach pro kit, kyb agxs,8 point roll cage ( not installed),mofugs short throw shifter,30 psi boost guage, egt guage, hallman mbc,c&r alum. rad.,2 spal slim fans, kinetic motorsports fmic-28"x12"x3.5" w/ 2.5" ss short route piping..

I know it also has a Tial BOV and wastegate. Thats all I know.

Can you get a breakdown of the slip? I just cant see how that is possible. The mph and HP sound accurate. But he is running an average of a full second faster then most. Does he log his runs?

R/T.....211
60'.....1.681
330.....4.941
1/8.....7.641
MPH.....90.24
1000....9.968
1/4.....11.968
MPH.....108.59

I can easily see it being an 11 sec car with the mods it has, but the MPH is a bit weird. I know that cars like LS1's run 11's at like 105.

I'm pulling his car up to Indy Bash tomorrow, we're going to see whats its doing this year. That post above is correct, it is on his Cardomain page. There is a scan of the slip somewhere, I couldn't find it.
