7900, What turbo should I look into?
Posted by NHH223, Sep-22-05 04:11 PM
I've been thinking about getting an Evo 3 turbo... don't have any supporting mods what-so-ever, but the turbo will get me to BUY the supporting mods, LOL.

Questions are as follows...

I want a turbo that's gonna be good for street/strip

high HP #s are a MUST, but I want to be able to turn down the boost for winter driving, bad weather driving, non-racing, etc.

I plan to rebuild my engine this winter or spring. In the event of a rebuild, I'd like my turbo to be able to keep up with my engine, and be able to crank out enough HP. I don't want let's say a 16G style turbo, to crap out at 300HP on 93 octane and just daily driving. I'm looking for one that can flow me around 350 crank HP on my stock engine, and 500HP on my built engine. Do they have ones with such a wide band?

As much as I love turbos, I'm pretty much clueless about them. People say T3, T4, Turbonetics, Garrett and Mitsu, and I pretty much get confused from there. The bigger the better, but once its too big, you might scare her away, LOL, kidding, HUGE turbo = LONG spool time.

So, I need a turbo that flows 350-400 crank HPish on stock engine on 93, that will get me to 500+ crank HP on a built engine on 93 pump gas. But MORE HP on race gas... can you guys help me out?

How about how fast down the 1/4 mile do you want to go? If your looking for the 11's, then you might want to skip on past the EVO III, since the there are only a handful of them in the 11's, and they are all AWD (from what I know). Then again, a 14b recently went 10.8 on a FWD. The 16g is definitly a proven turbo that spools up fast, and can still provide plenty of top end power. I would go here:

http://linux.forcedperformance.net/merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=FP&Category_Code=DSM-Turbo

and check out what they have. In the mean time, do some research on turbo's. Then after you may see what you want/need for a turbo.

There are SO many choices now it's not even funny. You basically have to figure out what you want and even more so what you DON'T want.
Everyone wants lots of hp. Being a "streetcar" is going to be your only limiting factor. Obviously you don't want a turbo thats going to make 500hp but doesn't hit full boost until 4500rpms.
Everyone I've talked to with an EVOIII 16G loves it. Yes, there are not alot of people in the 11's yet, but they're still there. ;)
There are many tried and true turbos that you can go with that aren't going to be overkill but still leave you room to grow. 20G's, FP Greens and SBR turbos are all good to get you where you want to go without breaking your wallet or your car.
Read, read, read...
oh, a VERY important thing I forgot to mention. IF you do start looking around at EVOIII's, do NOT, I repeat, NOT even think about buying an EVOIII16G GTturbo. They are chinese made garbage. Only buy MHI EVOIII 16G's from reputable vendors.

I second this also, and on a side note, FP is running has the EVO III on sale for $539!!

I don't think you could find a better deal on a brand new one!

If you want 500 HP on a built block, I think you are going to have to go bigger than the EVO turbo. I just got done on this search, and my new turbo is going to be a bit big, but I went with the GT35R turbo from SBR. For a more street friendly turbo check out their GT11 or GT12 turbos.

Thanks for all the replies!

First of all, the EVO 3 is a basic foot-in-the-door mod. Buy the turbo, build up around it, have some fun, see my 1/4mi times.

Now, even if I get a nice 12.9 at the track, I'll be pretty happy. Here's a game plan for my modding...

Apex'i N1 Cat-back
Short shifter
Body work

Parts Cache

EVO3 Turbo
EVO3 o2 housing
Downpipe and high-flow cat/test pipe
Higher flowing exh manifold
Injectors, pump, fuel controller
Used 2G head
Cams, springs, retainers
Used 1G Intake Manifold
BIG TB
Dejon Tool Blow-thru setup with GM MAF and MAF-T
Intake pipe for turbo (no stock MAF)
Boost controller

The idea here, is to squeeze as many ponies out of my stock block without killing it. I can stock up on the head (to be ported out), the head components, the intake manifold and TB. Any parts that can work with my T-25, the blow-thru setup, the full exhaust from the turbo back, can go on as soon as I get it.

The thing I want to do, is take the head off my engine, dump the built/ported head on, with a bigger exhaust manifold, intake manifold, and throttle body, along with the new turbo and supporting mods.

The installs for the throttle body, fuel injectors, and what not, will be a breeze. And I'll have to redo my timing belt again, and also throw on a new head gasket, cuz 135K on a stock head gasket wont hold much boost.

Sound like a plan guys?

When I save up for the engine rebuild, tranny rebuild, LSD, thats where I might need the bigger turbo that may throw me down the 1/4mi faster.

Thanks again guys, Nick

P.S. The EVO III GT is a piece of crap. If it's not MADE in JAPAN, then I'm most likely NOT going to buy it. Thanks for the warning, I read the post on how much it sucks, and the comparision that slowboyracing or someone did between the 2 turbos.

if you cant get 12.9 with all that stuff, there might be problems. i got a 13.3 on a GSX with an exhaust and some more boost+race gas, thats all. good luck.

Sounds like you want a ball bearing turbo. (Cha-ching)......that's the sounds of your bank selling your car. I'd say go with a Precision turbo (T3/T4) or 20g.

BTW...WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO BE TUNING WITH!??!?!?!?!? I see nothing about SAFC, DSMLink, or AEM EMS........And more importantly, a wideband O2. Unless you want to pay someone $500+ to tune, while you can pay $300-350 for a decent wideband.

BTW 2....I'm not sure if anyone has heard this, but just incase, I got an e-mail from DSMLink about them researching into using a MAP sensor on their next release!!!! That is just music to my ears.

You can already use Map Sensor on DSMLink. and a few other Goodies. See below for a tune i did for a friend logging Wideband and MAp Sensor.

A GT35R is a perfectly capable street turbo (and a good choice I might add).

My ported and clipped big 16g pulls like a motha on the street. I some times get carried away on on-ramps to the freeway, but then again this is my first awd turbo car.
