7600, RTV on front cover gasket

I have two deep scores in my front cover on the gasket side, and I am changing out the gasket right now. I am thinking I should use RTV that comes out of the tube and just apply it evenly all over as opposed to the spray. Anyone do this too? Better, worse?

It seals better but can get messy. ;)
