When you view timing advance on a logger, is it displaying total timing, or timing minus the 5 degree base? So lets say the logger says 20 degrees, is it 20 total, or is it really 25 degrees BTDC? I just wonder if the ECU is "adding" in the advance on the display, or if its not including the base with it.

I think you are very confused :)

First, you say that it shows timing advance, yet in your little math problem, you retarded it 20 degrees. Anyways, afaik, it just shows advance. So if it shows 20, then it is advancing the timing 20 degrees, so you will be at 15 degrees atdc, unless I am completly mistaken, which could be the case.

Well when you view timing advance on a logger, its showing timing advance. Spark had to fire before top dead center for the engine to run! I just want to know if when the screen says 20 degrees, for example, that its actually firing the spark at 20 degrees BTDC, or is it really firing at 25 degrees BTDC, assuming the factory set base timinig of 5 degrees BTDC. I just dont know if the ECU is programmed to "assume" the base timing is set to 5 degrees BTDC.

It's only showing what it adds or subtracts from the base. If you have 5^ base, the ECU is seeing that as "zero" and then adding or subtracting from there.

if you have 1.8g for a logger, in the settings you can actually change it from 0-15, and have alarms too.
