6399, ques about timing belt parts Posted by eclipzGST, Jul-10-03 12:29 PM
does the stuff listed on this page (for 1G's) have the same parts number for 2G's? http://www.partznet.com/mitsudsmclub.html I tried calling but the internet parts guy already went home. Also, what exactly will I need to do the timing belt besides the belt itself and the tensioner? I'm thinking about getting rid of the balance shafts so I probably won't need any of that shit.

You'll need the pulleys as well. I believe there are three pulleys, the idler, tensioner, and one other, and you'll also need a special Miller tool that makes slacking the belt MUCH easier. It is 20$ from Miller tools. There are also two other auxiliary belts as well that should be replaced while doing the TB. You also may want to do a water pump if that hasn't been done yet. If there is more, I'll respond again, but that's all I can think of at the moment.

Vfaq, in the engine section, has a whole checlist and procedure for timing belt stuff. Check it out. Hope this helps.

I already printed it out. ;) I was really just curious about the part #'s. I also had a guy at work spot weld a nut onto a piece of threaded rod instead on buying the tensioner tool. I woulda just used the battery tie down but heard bad things about doing that. As far as the water pump, do you think I should have to do this at 60K ? I figured it would have a little more life than that.

all you need to order for the balance shaft elemination it the stub shaft and the front case gasket. check the v-faq at the very bottom. and if you do the timing belt all you need is the timing belt and tensioner along with the tool(which you already have...err...made).
yeah i think that's it. :thumbsup
