Either a syncro or a bent shift fork. Sorry.

after putting some thought into this. I believe that somethign could be wrong with the shifter cables? How much of a possiblty is that?

Its not really a possibility since the cables will always allow you to get into 3rd and 4th for the most part. They way the shifter cables work is that they have an adjustable length just under the shifter in the console that can be shortened or lengthened to allow you better throws. What normally happens is that the one that controls side to side movement, I.E. 1st/2nd and 5th/R, will get too short and not allow you to go into those gears cause the cable can't reach.

What all this means is if you can get into third, you should equally be able to get into 4th since the same cable controls both. since 4th only is the problem, then you most likely have the bent shift fork.

But when my car is turned off, it has a hard time going into 1st and 2nd, unlike my last car. this I have to use some force to get it in. Kinda hard to explain.

Hard as in the shifter doesn't want to go to the left or just won't get into gear? The shifter cables would make it so you can't move it far enough to get to the 1st and 2nd gear, but if it just won't go into gear, its the fork or synchro problem.

>its the fork or
>synchro problem.

...and i'm willing to bet syncro. The syncro teeth are cut in such a way that the engine torque holds it in place and keeps the gear engaged. When the syncro teeth wear to a point, the torque will no longer hold it in gear and will actually work to force the syncro ring off the syncro engagement teeth. Fix? Replace the syncro ring, blocker ring, and sometimes, depending on wear, the speed gear.

It's just weird that a 4th gear synchro would go before 2nd or even 3rd. There usually aren't any problems with 4th.

i just bought my GSX and i can't get mine to go into 4th at all. i know it needs a clutch so if i don't have a synchro or fork problem could the clutch keep it from going into fourth?

Thats why I have a hard time thinking it would be a syncro also. Would a syncro still go bad do you think if it doesnt give me any problems some days?
