5931, AWD or FWD?
Posted by BRU_ce, Jun-13-04 09:04 PM
My friend recently bought a 1G Talon which was supposedly the AWD model, but I had it the whole day today, and I thought to myself, "man, AWD launching isn't a whole lot better than FWD launching" and then coming home I floor it in second and actually spun the tires! Now I'm pretty convinced it isn't an AWD, but the title says it is and so did the owner! Is it possible that it IS an AWD and something broke connecting to the rear tires? I dunno... but it is strange.

Also, everything on it is stock, except for a boost controller and 3" turbo back exhaust. What kind of power should this thing be making? Definitely feels HELLA fast... I would say it FEELS like around 275-285HP but I dunno. Aftermarket boost gauge says it is boosting at 12PSI. How much power should that be typically?

Well, I looked underneath the car just now and found this:

So I guess that means it's an AWD, but I really REALLY don't think the rear tires are moving. If they are, AWD sucks cuz I can spin that shit easily. Can anything be broken to where the rear tires wouldn't spin?

Oh, and the camera's flash makes the rust seem a LOT worse than it really is.

The diff could be dead. Does the car have ABS? What year is it?

The 90-91 cars with ABS have an open rear diff which lets you spin the tires. 90-91 Non-ABS cars have an LSD. They all went to LSD in 92 with the 4 bolt though.

You have a horrible seat of the pants radar. car can't be making 275-285 with just those mods.

I concur. Turboback and stock boost ~200 hp.

Also, we need to know the year of the car. I have a 91 with the open rear diff and I have spun them in stock trim a little bit before. Not much, but a little.

No, trust me it's a lot more than 200HP. It's not stock boost I said it had a boost controller. I kept up (but lost) to a mid 90s vette, annihalated an RX-8, fucked up my launch and STILL caught up and put 2 or 3 car lengths on a new Grand Prix... I know what 200HP feels like and it is way more than 200HP.

Heh, even my boss at work who used to have a stock GS-T and was raggin on the Talon saying that, "since it's so old there's no way it's as fast as my 98 GS-T" drove the car and admitted it was a shitload faster than his GS-T...

BTW, I'm really not trying to brag or anything, just conveying how fast this car feels. Plz don't flame me *runs scared*

Well if the boost gauge reads 12 psi its set at stock boost level. It doesnt matter if youve got a boost controller if its at stock level. Even so you wouldnt be able to go more than like 15 psi on stock fuel pump/injectors anyway.

Hmm... perhaps the gauge is wrong, cuz it doesn't read negative for some reason. I think somethin is broke in there.

Anyways, maybe the previous owner did more mods than I knew about, but man trust me it's more than 200HP heh.

It's a 93 model.

93 GSX? That rules out the open diff. possibility I guess. The spinning is strange, and I don;t know what the story is on it.

Ok, let's say for a second that the gauge is broken and it's running 19 PSI but reading 12. That's even worse.
Not knowing how much boost you're running is 'Engine death: The Prologue'. On stock fuel etc, running more than stock boost +2 or 3 is asking for pain.

I guess I believe you if you say it feels more powerful, but if the gauge reads 12, I'll go with 12 simply because I want to believe he's driving around a car that is well taken care of and not boost abused.

FIX THE BOOST GAUGE!!! (or at least make sure it's working.) Also, lower power in the AWD car wiull feel super fast. It's the nice part of AWD. :thumbsup

LOL, I dunno what the deal is on it, but it's a really fun car to drive. He has like, $0 to spend on it... he spent all his money buying it. Can the stock turbo even put out 19 PSI? I have no experience with the 4G63. I did a valve cover gasket change on it and that's it. The dipstick likes to pop out and spill oil on the engine causing what looks like the engine to explode but it's just smoke from the burning oil, hahaha...

Yes, these cars are EXTREMELY fun to drive. And relatively cheap to mod (but break alot due to trying to go fast on used/old/cheap parts) Cheap and fast means unreliable, but I love my DSM with all my checkbook.

The stock turbo has gotten people into the 11's so it's certainly a potent little thing.

Dip Stick: Take a set of pliers or something and clamp the dip stick tube so it's not a perfect circle, but more of an oval. This will keep the dip stick from popping out. The only bad part is that it makes it a little tougher to get in and out, but it worth it for sure in saved oil and fear of engine death.

The most truthful thing EVAR posted on a DSM board...

isn't the dipstick popping out a sign of overboosting? i dunno if that's the reason it pops out but i remember reading something on why it does. someone remind me if that's it or not. and if it is from overboosting that's a good sign your gauge is probably broken.

Hmm... if it is broken that would explain why it feels so fast when supposedly it's only got stock boost.

The little "light show" A/F Ratio gauge reads at the first green dot at WOT however, so I *think* the car is doing alright fuel-wise.

A/F gauges are worthless. Don't ever use it as a tuning tool. It would be better to remove it and replace it with EGT, Oil Pressure, Water Temp, or any number of other gauges.

Pull the boost gauge and check all the connections. Make sure it was tapped into a good place in the engine bay. (Get an install vfaq for it and reinstall it that way to be sure).

Also, dipstick popping out is not a sign of over boosting, but a sign of boosting in general. It happens alot on DSM's, so just clamp the tube and be done with it.

I would think that sometimes it could mean 'blowby'.

so you're saying that the boost guage will read 12psi after it builds and no vacuum (negative on the boost guage) at idle? if so you got a bust boost guage brother....I'd get another one ASAP as no/broke/stock boost guage + MBC + boost creep = boom

It could just be tapped at a really crappy place

;) didnt even think about that
