what was wrong with it? my friends RPM gauge stops working every once in a while. wierd?

I bought the obd2 cable and null modem adapter to use palmenstein to log my car. But, I can't get it to connect. :scratch I thought maybe it was the null modem connector so I just swapped on a gen changer and tried that. It didn't work but I had left it still plugged in.
When I got in my car today I saw my palm sitting on the seat and for some reason the first thing that popped in my head was that the palm shows speed. I unplugged it and started the car and it worked. :shrug
