I have a 97 n/a but I am picking up an AWD with bad tranny (gets stuck in gear, metal shavings in case). Need to know interchangeability of years for the 1g. Search did nothing. Can anyone help? Thanks

this would be a jeff or matt question IMO.

i think if it is a 90-91 you can interchange them, then 92-94 are interchangable. dont quote me though. i may have no idea what i am talking about.

its 90 trannies will work in 90 and 91-94 will all work together. They will all fit no matter what the year from 90-94, but the shift cables will have to be replaced for the 90 to work in a 91+ or viceversa.

The 90's have a 22 spline output shaft to the x-fer case, and the 91-94 have a 23 spline output shaft.

If you buy a 90 tranny for a 91+ car, you need the x-fer case as well otherwise your parts won't match. Same goes for a 91+ tranny in a 90 car.

I just recently put a 90 tranny in my 93, and here's what I found...90 has a different part number from 91-94 but it can still be used if you swap the 23 spline output shaft from the 91-94 into the 90(90 has a 22 spline shaft). On a side note I have heard of people with 91's that had a 22 spline, I don't know the exact date when they switched from 22 to 23 spline output shafts, but the shafts themselves are interchangable.
Also one of the gear selector levers on the 90 tranny is shorter than the one on the 93, the shifter and cables worked fine, the only thing is that it resuelted in a shorter throw due to the cable not having to extend as far to engage the gear. I didn't really notice much of a throw difference though. My theory is that if you have a 90 car and put in a later tranny you have to get the later cables and shifter, because the 90 wasn't designed to extend the cable as far to get in gear. I'm not trying to lead anybody astray here, but this is what I have discovered and believe to be true, and I've been wrong before, so you might want to ask shepracing or somebody who has had more expirence with this type of stuff.

Thanks for the input guys. I tend to research a little too much when I get something new but here it what I have found out so far (besides the very helpful info on this post). According to my DSM tranny rebuilder, there is a 21? spline listed on his software. Not sure where that is from but just a curiousity. Also, for those who get stuck, he was able to mate up gears and parts from the FWD tranny to the AWD tranny (customer happened to have the other tranny). Not sure of the years, but it may help out if someone is stuck. And not to spread rumors but I have a 94 and there is information out there that claims the 94 has stronger syncros than the previous trannys. If anyone knows about the 21 spline and the syncros, I would appreciate corraborating information. Thanks.
