5084, MY 2G ECLIPSE IS ACTING VERY STRANGE
Posted by eclipsegst123, Nov-25-07 01:12 PM
is there anyone out there that can help me,
i dont know whats wrong with my Gst,
i was getting on the interstate yesterday and at 3500rpm it was sputtering a little , then it back fired twice.
when i got off i was getting a very rough idle and it took me a little longer than usual to get up to the speed limit, it just seems like it wont let me go any faster than 75-80mph
and it sputters at 3500 to 4500 rpms and sometimes i cannot go over 4000 rpms, someone please help with this problem, i have no idea, hope it is cheap to fix.

I am sorry if i broke any forum rules by not spelling right.

first check the compression on the engine
(standard pressure is 178psi)
if thats good check:

--ignition system (coil, wires, plugs) and ignition timing

--take the intake tube off and make sure the turbo spins okay

i figured out i fouled out the plugs, because it was running rich because of a air leak, but i checked my turbo anyways and it spins great but is it normal for it to move slighty in and out, like 1/16of and inch?
im about to order a different j-pipe so i can eliminate that leak.

are you running a 14b or a 16g. if its a 14b thats normal unless you've had it rebuilt

your turbo is fine.

the shaft play is caused by wear on the thrust bearing assembly. your okay for now, but you don't want it to get any worse. the play should go away as soon as you get oil pressure to the bearings.

the 3 main causes of thrust bearing wear/damage are:

-dirty/contaminated oil

-baked on oil from no cool-down before shutting the car off

-overboosting the turbo

yea that white evo guy is right there was a leake in the IC pipe right off the turbo

so my 16g isint going to fuck up??

and i orderd a new j-pipe to fix the leak so i have baought new spark plugs just so i can foul them out.

No you didn't :eek ?! Just because he stated the obvious (before I did).........

Damn you Batman!

Oh yeah, your 16g is probably fine, not perfect but OK. Just watch for any grooves or marks that may appear on the fins or housing. That would indicate up and down motion that would be a problem. Also watch for excessive smoke under boost, that could be seals or thrust bearing wear.

so does the "not perfect" mean that its going bad but not right now?

and i drove it a little today and there is white smoke when i shift but thats it , still waiting for this j-pipe though...

White smoke = coolant, water or just condensation
Blue smoke = oil
Black smoke = unburnt fuel

Could be. Just keep an eye on it. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I know this is old, but I wanted to comment.

White 'smoke' is usually coolant or possibly some condensation, but it can also be raw fuel. As in truly unburnt fuel. Black smoke is actually partially burnt fuel, as you'll see with alot of rich running cars.
