4801, Pulled my 4G63
Posted by techboy, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Well ... I finally got around to pulling the 4G63 this past Saturday. Started at 9:15 in the morning and had it on the stand by 3:00 with an hour lunch break in there. All in all I didn't think that was too bad considering this motor is new to me and I'd never pulled one before. After pulling several 420A's I actually thought this motor was alot easier to pull. The motor mounts are more accessiable and the wiring harness I didn't think was quite as complicated. The starter is a bear - the back of the block!, who thought of that? And the A/C compressor I didn't unbolt until I had the motor half way out the engine bay, but it's out nonetheless.

I discovered my OEM flywheel has some heat cracks in it. So whoever owned the car before me was beating on it I guess b/c I only got about 500 on the motor since I bought it and I haven't beat it. I'm trying to decided if I want to go right to a lightened flywheel now or just get a temporary OEM one until I can afford a clutch and do it all at the same time. I think I'll put a post up in the FS section and see what people have laying around. If any of you are like me I've probably got enough parts at my house to make at least one other complete car :eek

Pulling them out is cake compared to putting it back in. ;) Do you have a load leveler? It makes it quite a bit easier.

Yeah, I have a load leveler ... I used it to assist in getting the motor out. Why is putting it back in so much harder?

The thing that got me was all those damn vac lines going everywhere. What a crock!

Yeah, I should've said, "hooking everything back up" instead of, "putting it back in."

Ahhh ... gottcha ... yeah, funny you guys both mention that. I kept commenting Saturday how many damn vac lines there are compared to the 420A. I did take the time to label a few things with masking tape as I was going, but not everyhing. Oh well, I'll figure it out when the CEL comes on.

or you could just eliminate most of them. :P I'll post up a link to the diagram in a few min.

Wait. Why does the MBC go from the intake manifold to the WG and not just from the J-pipe to the WG? Am I missing something, here? :wary

EDIT:
On the Galant, I've got it like this: J-pipe > MBC > WG.

You can do either. I use the J- pipe also.

Btw, I don't get you guys finding all those vac hook ups. I got like 4 of 'em (not counting the MBC cause that comes out with the engine), lol!

Oh yeah, load leveler FTW (and I ain't got one :-( )

I use the j-pipe for MBC and intake mani for BOV. It ended up cutting out a bunch of hose and a T.
I'm glad you got those diagrams up so quick. I was going to do it as soon as I got to work and forgot all about it. lol

Thanks guys ... that's actually really helpful and makes a lot of sense. I was thinking alot of them could probably be eliminated, or least tied together, I just didn't know where to begin. I'll definitely print this out and save it for after I get the motor back in.

I have 4 vac lines coming from the Intake manifold.

1 to bov w/ a "t" for 3.3bar
1 to boost gauge
1 to valve cover
1 to afpr

1 vac from lower IC pipe to MBC and Wastegate

Thats it.

Load leveler makes putting the motor back in very easy. Especially if you are like me and like to install the tranny and longblock together.

I pull the motor in under a hr and can install it in just about the same time :/

edit:... A little longer without air tools lol

Good deal. From what I know about how things run (at least in this respect, anyway), I didn't see why my route would be a problem, but the schematics above show things differently is all.

Aside from the boost source off the second nipple in from the firewall on the TB (P, is it?), I couldn't tell you what most of them do. No CEL, no idle surge, and no trouble passing smog - even without that fitting on the side of the valve cover. LOL.

I have it run off the j pipe too...had to make my own nipple tho.

I'm going to use that diagram as I should be doing a heart transplant *not a 6 bolt* sometime this week when the new crankshaft and bearings come in.

I get sick to my stomach whenever I look in that engine bay and see nothing but rubber lines and electrical connections.

i run mine off the BOV line. 3 vac lines here. AFPR, BOV, MBC. ;-)

The hoses blow. I'm going to start replacing vac lines with hard, brake lines. ;)

Five feet of easily bended bard line which can use regular vac line as a coupler for five dollars FTW. You can even polish it if you want to. Haha.

I just pulled mine yesterday (4/29)

Wasn't that bad.

While its out I plan on doing the vacuum line removal as talked about earlier in the thread.

Pics of the engine back in.

Just gotta wire up my safc, wideband, fuel pump rewire, put the fluids/plugs in, mount up the FMIC and start er up.

Glad to hear it's back in man. Been a while since you've had some seat time in the old girl. Best wishes for a smooth ending to this project. :cheers

But you're not going to get very far unless you hook up those shifter cables :order

Congrats on being close.

Haha yeah I got everything hooked up wiring/cable wise. That was just as soon as we dropped it in, after the pics were taken we hooked everything up.

I only have to wire up my wideband, fuel pump rewire and put all the fluids in and plugs in and I should be back on the road.

I'm going to get it tuned at 10 psi to start out with and once everything seems to be good gunna bump it up to 20 :thumbsup

I do extremely miss the car, but I'm glad this happened b/c it was a huge learning experience, tearing apart 2 motors and putting in a new crankshaft and bearings and putting everything back together + the research I feel I know my car inside and out now. Plus I had to work full time at 6.50 and wait for every single pay check to move the project futher along. I hope all the hard work and effort pays off like I'm hoping for it too.

Quoted for importance. Sounds kinda lame and corny but these are life lessons here. This will help you tackle other problems in life's journey. I'm actually being serious, go figger.

Good for you

That is how mine was set up as well :)

Although I did have a forth which lead to a 3.3 bar boost sensor ;)

I just put mine back in today finally. I took some pics, I'll have to post them up when I can. I'm still a week or two away from driving, but it's getting there.

....geez....Was putting all the fluids in it getting ready to start it up and....oh look at this little dripping spew of antifreeze.
