Hey guys whats up. I dont generally post in this section because up till now I have had no need to :). Yesterday my brother called me at work to tell me that he had just bought a 93 eclipse for $450. Well I went over there and took a look at it afterwork and everything is in great shape except for the engine. The engine has a blown head gasket. The previous owner bought the car to work on and then didnt ever have time to do anything with it so sold it. My question is should we take the time to rebuild this 1.8 4g37 or can we pull that one and replace it with the 4g63 or make some other type of swap with the head or block. The car is a manual by the way. I just really have no experience with this little 1.8 and dont know what can potentially be done. So basically through all my rambling here I want to know what you guys think would be the best course of action to make this car put out some descent power. trying to keep the budget around $3000 here by the way. Well to convert to a 2.0 you will need the entire engine from intake to exhaust manifold. Also a 2.0 ECU, wiring harness, transmission, possibly axles, and maybe even more. It is a lot of work and will end up being pretty expensive. It will be cheapest to just pop a new headgasket on the 1.8.

I picked up a very functional 1.8 eclipse for $500. It's got 160k, but it's reliable. The body is dented in every way imaginable. Its leaking everywhere, gaskets and rings especially, so I know it's gonna need everything rebuilt soon.

Is it worth it to rebuild? I have all the tools & experience necessary, but not so much free time.
It's not sellable cuz it would never pass smog (required for resale).

Should I just junk it when the time comes and find another beater in better shape?

So is there anything that can be done to get some descent power from this car.

Well, if you have $3K to spend, why not buy a 1G turbo car that needs NO work?

Well its not me its my brother. Im thinking that the best bet maybe to rebuild this one which will be a great learning experience and to sell it then have him buy another car. But he seems set on keeping this car and modding it. I just dont see the car being able to putup the numbers he wants.

if ive learned anything from dsmtuners, you cant do shit with that 1.8. even if you could, nobody makes parts for it. the swap is too much work also. pretty much all you can do is use it as a daily driver...
