4415, changed my caps saturday...
Posted by eclipzGST, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Starts up no prob and clicking noises from coil pack area disappeared. :thumbsup
Changing them was cake. I did it myself with a friend watching over my shoulder to make sure I didn't mess anything up. The one that you could actually see was leaking was pretty bad. My friend said if it would have been like that much longer, it would have damaged the board. Was literally caked up under the cap. The other two weren't bad but one was starting to swell a little on the bottom.
Now, I just need an axle and I will be all set for the winter.

Make sure you take rubbing alcohol and a Q-tip to the board to clean up that acid. It can still eat through the board. Glad you got it fixed Tony :)

well, mine looked all black and burnt but when I rubbed it with the q-tip soaked with alcohol, it all came off. Just try to clean up all the residue. I had to clean a good area around it also cause it looked like it leaked and left a "trail" but when I held up the ECU the way it would be mounted, the trail went "up". My friend said it could have been smoke.:shrug I cleaned it all up the best I could and so far, so good.

Just curious Tony, but what exactly was your car doing to make you replace the caps? I understand how/why they go bad and some of the symptoms, I'm just curious about yours. :)

It would just randomly sputter and die and then not want to start. When it would start sputtering, I could here distinct clicking sounds from behind the radio. After it sat for a few min., it would start again.
This was the reason the guy sold me the car so cheap. It was his wife's car and he couldn't figure out what it was and didn't want her getting stuck anywhere.

:cheers
There's actually more to the story. It all basically boils down to, she just wanted something bigger and reliable. Like a brand new Durango...

Did your caps have kind of a bubbling, melted look to them on the side of the can? I know to look for the acid and bulging on the bottom of the cap, but I've never heard anyone mention the sides of the cap looking bubbled. Mine were, so I was just wondering.

From the top and sides, they looked pretty normal except for the one that's circled, that one had a brown ring around the bottom that looks like it was starting to spread.
