Hey, my friend just bought a '92 Talon TSi AWD and it's completely stock. It has a couple small problems:

1) The shifter is REALLY loose and wobbles around all over the place, however it does NOT pop out of 5th and doesn't grind so I think it's just the linkage or something. Would it be just a matter of tightening all of it up or could this be something bigger?

2) The rear tires locked up on the highway at about 80mph coming back from Orlando. I'm pretty sure it's the xfer case recall, but is there any chance it could be associated with fuel cut or the ABS system?

3) The car buckles randomly. I can't tell if it is fuel cut or if maybe the tranny is locking up for a split second then letting go again. Any ideas? Fuel cut would be strange, considering it's stock. The lady that owned it before used 87 octane in it (ouch) so I'm thinking maybe the computer got used to the 87 and now it's having problems with the 93?

As a bump to myself, I just wanna say that the free mods RULE... on a 1G.

I did:

1) Open up stock air can
2) remove wastegate solenoid restriction

to both my friends' 2G Talon AWD and 1G Talon AWD

On the 1G there was a pretty noticeable difference in power, on the 2G.. not so much. But, still a teensy peppier. I should prolly check for boost leaks on the 2G, tho.

It's funny that I'm doing more work on the 4G63s now than on my own 420A.

chances are it is the xfer case recall. you are gonna need some parts if that is what happened. if it gets bad enough that it locks up, you are in some trouble. you might check with mitsu though, if they have no record of the service, they may fix it all for free. it might take some negotiating, but i suppose it could happen. :-)

bucking could be fuel cut, but normally you would know because fuel cut is like a brick wall. you may change some ignition components. plugs, wires, coil pack, etc etc first. the change in gasoline octanes will have nothing to do with it. if it makes you feel better, unplug your battery for a few minutes and let the ecu relearn the trims with 93. if the tranny was locking up for a split second, it would be freakin screwed and not random. it might have something to do with the xfer case recall like above when the tires locked up. maybe.

Heh, it's funny... even tho the wheels locked up and he almost died in a fiery spectacular crash on the highway (which he didn't), the tranny seems fine now. The wheels are not locked up anymore and he still has his AWD (apparently... because it still launches like a bat outta hell)

We're gonna go get the recall done tomorrow, but it seems like the AWD components are fine *shrug* It doesn't even make any weird noises, whines, or anything.

edit, oh and so far no more fuel cut or whatever it was after we reset the ECU and did those free mods *crosses fingers*

friendly suggestion, dont drive the car anymore until you get the xfer case checked out. you think he almost died a fiery death prior, wait til it happens again if you are driving a bunch. not safe.

Oh, yeah I know... definitely. We're not driving it per se. We had it towed home and then we saw that the wheels weren't locked so we decided to do a test launch to see if the tranny was still working, but only to about 40mph and then we parked it again.

Won't touch it again till it's "fixed"

Is your shifter loose in one direction? I was sitting in my car and my friend was under the hood and he was tightening down either the under-hood shifter bracket or if you can you tighten the bushings at all? LOL I'm nut sure, but he was working on SOMETHING and the shifter got alot tighter. It still wiggles to the right of whatever gear I'm in, but it feels a lot better.

I have a stock 2G as to shifter, in-car bushings, and underhood bushings.

We found the problem day before yesterday.

We finally got the car back from getting the recalls done on it (They replaced the entire transfer case for free without arguing) and we tore apart the center dash to look at the shifter.

Turns out four rubber bushings were missing! Not worn out, just.. missing. We bought them (at $2.50 each) and popped them in and now the shifter is GREAT.
