1974, Driver's side clicking (somewhat urgent) Posted by Vandy420a, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Well, i'm clicking, especially under acceleration and braking, on my driver's side. New CV time...now my question is:
Should I just get a whole new axle, including the middle piece on the driver's side? Should I go ahead and do the pass. side, too? And if I'm on a little bit of atime crunch before I have to drive it to MO, what tranny fluid can I sub for syncroshiftII?
thanks! matt

ya, just get a while new axle assembly. It comes with the inner and outer CV joints and the middle shaft part. Penzoil Synchromesh is a replacement for BG. I got mine at AutoZone.

You would not believe me if I told you how easy it is to do it yourself.

my friend is ordering the axle for me and then we'll probably end up doing it together at his shop...so hopefully i won't have to shell out too much

Thanks all!!...esp. for the quick answers! (too late to order tonight, but that was my fault for being stupid and forgetting my computer at work)
I'm hoping satan has the assmebly handy, and i'm gonna try and do it this weekend. I re-read tony's horror story about his install, but hopefully mine won't be that rusted, although with all the salt they use around here with just the threat of snow i wouldn't be surprised. I am surprised, though, at how it seems to go away, then come back later that day...weird.
Out of curiosity, what would happen if I just ignored it for like, ever? I fully plan on replacing it this weekend, but i'm just curious as to what kind of shenanigans would happen if I just left it alone for all eternity. Would the wheel eventually just sieze up, and the car go into a skid? Would the axle break a gear or piece inside the tranny? I assume that since I don't have a limited slip, one wheel would just skid and the other would get all the power, creating total high speed hilarity. We need to get someone on this, stat.

My CV boot was ripped all the way around and the joint was completely fucked. It WILL break if you don't fix it and you will end up with an axle atacthed to the tranny and not attached to the wheel, which will basically allow it to flop around while it's spinning. I can't even imagine the damage it could cause to the car, esp the tranny. Fix it! Do it ASAP. Usually, they only click while making turns. I'd jack it up and check the boots for damage before buying an axle. Also, make sure wherever you buy it from has a core return. I brought mine back with the spindle still attached and the guy just looked at it and laughed as he handed me my cash back. :P

700? damn satin is bad. i just did my passenger side axel, after the core return i paid $60 and some change from carquest. it was very easy and fun to try yourself, just hope your help is better than mine. he ended up ripping all three ball joint boots with the pickle fork.
do you guys use the pickle fork or the actual ball joint puller tool?

He's changing his axle, not the ball joints. You won't need a "pickle fork", just a big fuckin hammer. }(

I know the feeling. Thats why my car has so much down time between installs. Bah. Actually if I could afford it I would pay someone to put this tranny in for me ....But i cant so I guess I have my saturday night cut out for me :(

Most auto-part chain stores can have parts delivered within a day or 2. I called a place and they didn't have it in stock but said they could have it the next morning. Five days will still give you plenty of time...
