12802, 4G64 2G Head Swap GUIDE with QUESTIONS? Posted by LordDV8R, Sep-15-03 01:59 AM
I've been reserching the web and every message board i can get on, reading every thing i can about the 4G64 head swap of a 2G head on to my 97 Galant. Many people have tried to help me out with this threw e-mails and i've finaly took all that information and put it all together. I plan on posting it at the bottem, and i would like for anyone else to help me ADD anything im MISSING and CORRECT anything on it that is wrong (mind you i have never done the swap so i'm trying to make sure the info's right before i attempt it). I also have some additional questions at the very bottom, so feel free to answer any of thous for me as well.
Note: I have used the words of many peoples posts and e-mails in this list and i ask that no one get mad about it becouse im only useing it in a good way. If anyone has a problem with it, feal free to e-mail me and i'll write you an apoligy letter and correct the problem. Also please mind my bad spelling.
Thank You again everyone. David Graham -Lord DV8R-

4G64 DOHC Head Swap
Resister Pack and Injectors ---------------------------
How to wire the resistor pack in if you install larger low impedance injectors (such as stock 450cc turbo injectors)?
-The injectors get fed a constant 12v signal. The ECU turns on and off the ground to make the injectors pulse. As such, cut the 12v power lead to each injector, with room to splice a wire back to it. Run all 4 power wires to the center main wire on the resistor pack. Then, spice a wire from each of the 4 cut injector leads to one of the 4 remaining leads on the resistor pack.
-On top of that, you need to use an S-AFC to lean out your air readings considerably so that your car reduces the amount of gas you are getting. You are going from 275cc injectors to 450cc injectors.
-Need to install 450cc injectors as well as the resistor pack from a 1G or 2G in order to install the 2G turbo ECU.
DIS (Digital Ignition System) Module ------------------------------------
-The differences between the Spyder 4G64 and the Galant 4G64 is that the Galant has a distributor instead of a DIS. This will cause problems with installing the DOHC head on a Galant, unless you swap out the ECU and wiring to convert over.
-Also the intake manifold doesn't have a spot to mount the DIS module. The valve cover is missing a mounting point.
-You also need to wire in a 2G knock sensor for your 2G turbo ECU.
ECU & Wiring Harness --------------------
For the headswap you have two options, a spyder ECU or a 2g turbo ECU. There is a LOT more wiring involved in the 2g turbo ECU! With a spyder ECU, all you have to do is plug it in, swap one wire, and connect the appropriate wires to the ignition system (power transistor and coils).
Cam Gears, Cam Shaft & Timing Belt ----------------------------------
Cam Gear choices to use? -Can use the gears from a '94 DOHC Galant GS. -Can use 4g63 gears and advance the timing 3.5 degrees (or 1/2 a tooth). -Can also buy the adjustable aftermarket gears for the 4g63 and time them accordingly.
Timing Belt to use? -You must use the 1994 Galant DOHC 2.4L Timing belt, do not attempt to use a standard 4G63 timing belt, it will not work.
-There also is a plate on the 4G64 behind the timing belt idler pulley that must be removed.
The deal with the Camshaft Position Sensor? -This all depends on what ECU you decide to go with. (NOTE: More info needed on this)
Thermostat, Water, and Radiator -------------------------------
The deal with the Thermostat, Water, and Radiator? -You need all this stuff is needed because it bolts to the head. It’s completely different from the SOHC parts.
Added Parts Info ----------------
The additional parts needed for the 2G64 Head Swap into a Spyder:
-Going to need a turbo ECU, 2G turbo power transistor, 1G or 2G coil packs, and a 1G or 2G cam angle sensor.
Head Modifications ------------------
-There are also 5 holes that will need to be plugged off, do not worry, these holes are not important and will not harm the engine by plugging them off.
-Once the holes are plugged off install the pistons and rods, install the cylinder head using the DOHC 2.4L Galant head gasket (DO NOT USE A 4G63 HEAD GASKET).
Additional Questions? ---------------------
-Will the ECU from the Spyder work with the 2G 4G63 Head?
-Will my stock pistons work with the 2G Head? Or will i need diffrent ones and if so which ones?
-Whats the deal with the Camshaft Position Sensor?
-The intake manifold doesn't have a spot to mount the DIS module so what do you sugest i do with it? Just let it hang?
-Whats the deal with wiring in a 2G knock sensor for your 2G turbo ECU? And do i need one if i use the Spyder ECU?
-Is there any difrence in the 2G Turbo ECU and the normal 2G ECU?
-Do I need to use an S-AFC to lean out your air readings considerably so that your car reduces the amount of gas it is going to get from the 450cc injectors? (What is a S-AFC?)
