12776, white smoke - need your help!!! (long)

Ok, im going to explain everything i know to try to clear this up, here we go...

My power steering has always leaked, so i just kept putting it off, and finally it quit a few days ago. So i have NO power steering and the pump is dead.

I got my exhuast fixed 2 days ago, it was leaking from the down pipe connector. Then yesterday while sitting at a red light, i see white smoke surround me, i look back and its from my car. So i quickly get home, and let the car idle. I looked at the smoke, it was white, no tint of blue or anything. So i do some searching around and see a lot of people say either turbo or head gasket.

I check the turbo, no shaft play at all, and spins really easily.

I jack my car up and there is coolant on the crossmember on the belt driver side of the car.

I took off my power steering belt, and some how nocked off the accessory belt. When i tried to put that on, i noticed the water pump wheel moved around a lot. Not just spinning, but up and down and side to side. I try to put the belt on and it doesnt line up right, it looks twisted a little.

So i take off the belt and start up the car, and it runs fine, except for a ticking coming from the engine. I let it idle for 2 minuets. It didnt start smoking until it got to normal temp.

I'm SOOO lost, I dont have that much money now to put into this. What do you guys think, im definately going to take it to a shop soon.

PS sorry for this being so long, i figured it would help diagnose the prob, and eliminate some questions.

Thanks

It just sounds like a dead water pump. They are relatively inexpensive, but you need to take off the timing belt to change it. A shop will rape you up and down to do work like that. If you feel comfortable with doing work, you can do it for quite cheap. Just get a Chiltons manual and follow the directions :)

Was the smoke coming out your exhaust too? Or just from the engine bay?

Well if it's coming out of the exhaust that means it is obviously being burned in the engine. Did it just suddenly start happening? Usually coolant burning is either the headgasket leaking really bad, or the seals on the turbo. (like you said). Run a compression test to see if the HG is leaking.

well i just noticed it after i got my exhuast fixed?? So i think so (i guess it would be hard to notice that ;) )
What do i use to do the compression test??
I called up auto zone and they haev a water pump for 39.99, so ima do that tomorrow. My dad can help me, so ill save some bucks and do it myself.

THanks again jeff, i would give you some more points, but i cant!!!!:thumbsup

Just buy a compression tester. They should have them at any automotive store for around $20. All you do is take out one spark plug at a time, screw the tester in and crank the engine over to get that cylinders comp. You have to take out one of the fuses in the box right by the battery too in order to keep the engine from starting (I can't remember the name of the fuse, I'll go look). do that for each cylinder to get your compressions.

It's the MP1 fuse. It's the third from the left of the four connected to the positive battery terminal.
