12582, MPI voltages problem Posted by thedawg, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
I just rebuilt a 90 laser turbo, and it won't start. Everything looks fine except injectors #2-4 are only getting 1.5v and #1 (closest to tbelt) is getting almost 6v from the injector harness.
If I fire each injector by hand with a 6v battery, then jump in and crank it, all four cylinders fire once and then it just dies. ;(
Other stuff checked: -starter runs strong -compression is 80psi across -have spark on all, gap .029 -good fuel pressure in rail -injector harness and plug wires all making good contact -plug wires are connected to coil pack in correct? sequence-(4123 from left to right) -plug wires are within 2k ohm of spec -ecu looks brand new, no cap leakage, plugged in. -known good battery, charged overnight too -MPI and all fuses intact and test good
What do I need to replace? It ran before the rebuild, and I was really gentle on the electronics. Thanks guys

Compression is 80 across all 4? Is that a typo?

shouldn't it be 180? :P I would try swapping the coil pack with a known good one and see if that fixes it. I have a spare coil pack that I can get rid of if needed and also have a power tr unit.

80 is correct. It's a new engine, the rings haven't been seated yet.
How much for coil pack and transistor unit shipped? Reply to dkgreen@law.pepperdine.edu thanks.
The more I think about it I suspect the ECU, but any suggestions will be tried. Thanks!

12586, RE: MPI voltages problem fixed Posted by thedawg, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Fixed it. The throttle position sensor and resistor pack have identical plugs. They were mixed up. Once I switched them she started right up. :rolleyes
Runs great, very happy to have my first real DSM... bonus that I built it myself from the ground up... we'll see how long THAT lasts hehe.
Oh, and compression is closer to 200 after a 20 mile breakin. I'll measure more exactly after I get a couple hundred miles on the clock.
