Posted by jasonlee, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
i was wondering which year would be a good one to get?? i know the 93 has the watercooled oil cooler... is this the "preffered" engine? what is the difference in the rods and pistons for the different years??

thanks in advance!!!

the 93 is not a 6 bolt. The 6 bolt stopped in 92.5 ..

the oil cooler dont really matter, cause you can always purchase the oilfilter housing for an external oil cooler. As far as the engine goes its up to you, i mean the year doesnt really matter as long as the flywheel has 6bolts on it.
There is however the downside of getting an older engine such as my case a 90 4g63 that had 180000 miles on it. I had to literally tear it apart rebuild every aspect of it and so far so good.
if you are doing the 1g in a 2g you better save up to buy a DSMLINK to rid you of the dreaded RM(random missfire) cause its a paing in the arsss
As for engine internals all six bolts are have the same internals (talking bout turbocharged ones) the same rod lengths and piston bores the only difference is basically the oilcooler. Which i would highly recomend youget the air to air oil cooler.
good luck

90-92 take your pick. Just make sure it has 6 bolts on the flywheel.

90 was the only year to have the air cooled oil cooler. 91-99 are all water cooled. Just take any 6 bolt.

91 had beefier rods on the sixbolt.
Early 92's had the rare 6 bolt 4 bolt tranny combination.

IMO a 90 costs more in the long run because it has a different CAS connector and a couple other parts that are more expensive than their 91-92 counterparts.

AFAIK, all 90-92.5's have the same beefy rods.

Grab the oil adapter and external oil cooler from a 90 if you can, it's a nice unit.

well if you CAS ever goes out you can always use the later model CAS.....if your rebuildind the engine it really doesnt matter what year or what mileage the engine has, as long as there are no cracks on the block or head..

heh, i love my 6/4

But if you do get a 92, make sure it's a six bolt since half of them are and half of them aren't... vfaq has a write up about how to identify it as a six bolt based on the oilpan.

There's nothing wrong with the 7 bolts though, there are people running good numbers with them.
