10809, Where do I start? Posted by GreenGuyTurbo, May-20-04 01:12 PM
Hello everyone, Im new to this forum and to building a street import car. I have recently built and run several mustangs in my day and I thought I would try this world for a change. I decided on buying a 95-99 Eclipse. Now comes the tough part. Do I stick with the 97 AWD that I bought or go out and find a FWD car?? Im looking to make a 11 second daily driver. Im tired of all these little kids with loud exhaust and no go so I'm looking at possible doing some major work to the drivetrain. I also need to know if you guys (and gals if you are out there) know who to go to to get the best internals for inside the block. I have a few names on the list, but its you guys that have run the stuff on the street and know what is good and not. I have alot of other questions and possible ideas, but like all good things, you have to start at the bottom. *Just a side note, Im looking to run alot of boost and possible NOS. Well just enough nos to get the turbo spinning anyway!
Thanks in advance for your help and I look forward to hearing from you all soon!

I'd start by making sure you're posting in the right section.

Here are your basics for 300hp according to the site.
Intake Pipe and Filter - Replace your rubber one. Aftermarket Boost Gauge - Stock on sucks Blow Off Valve - Stock one sucks Boost Controller - Turn up the boost....I think you can run 15psi with no issues, but don't hold me to it. Cat-back Exhaust System - 3"...Stock sucks High Flow Cat/Straight Pipe - 3" High Flow Downpipe - 3" Exhaust Manifold - Stock is too restrictive O2 Sensor Housing - Restrictions Fuel Pump - Higher fuel pressure/more volume Intercooler Piping - Stock sucks Turbo Upgrade - t25 sucks..can't handle 15psi through the RPM range. Get a 16g or t3/t4....you can go cheap and get a 1g 14b Performance Clutch - You'll shred the stocker

so, basically you want to know if you should use an AWD or FWD car for an 11 sec daily driver? And you ALREADY have an AWD car? Are you alright?????

Stick with AWD dude. AWD Owns Joo. FWD Owns No Traction.

We need alot more info as to what you want. As for an 11 second car, AWD is your only option. You'll kill yourself if you get rid of AWD for FWD.
Internals are a HUGE thing to talk about so asking about what you should get is tough from our end as enthusiastic helpers. I recommend honestly, go to vfaq.com and read as much of that as you possibly can. Read it twice. It will provide you with the basics and the general knowledge you'll need to start formulating the right questions to ask.
To be honest, it's awesome that you are looking to get an 11 second daily driver but it's kind of walking before you crawl. Research is your best bet and then ask questions from what you read. If we just tell you to go out and get stuff, you'll get it, put it in and not know how to use it, tune it, or race it and it will break.
We love helping, but we need direction from you. You provide direction by having some background in it. We were all new to it once, and in the future I will be a noob to the domestic scene, so please just spend a few days reading and researching.
The following sites are gospel: -vfaq.com -teamnabr.com (DO NOT post there, but just use it to search. They are the smartest DSMers out there but have very strict rules and I don't even post there much but just research there in the DSM Tech Archives) -dsm.org
these sites are good to get your feet wet, research and ask questions in the appropriate forums: -dsmtuners.com -dsmtalk.com
And this site will be nice because it is a small community of 4g63'ers and we can help whenever you need it.

Good vendors who have specialized in DSMs for some time, or are current great people to do business with:
-Road Race Engineering (www.roadraceengineering.com) -Buschur Racing (www.buschurracing.com) -Slowboy Racing (www.slowboyracing.com) -AGP Turbo (www.agpturbo.com) -Forced Performance (www.forcedperformance.net) -Mach V (www.machv.com) -Pruven Performance (www.pruvenperformance.com) -Extreme Motorsports (www.extrememotorsports.com) -Conicelli Mitsubishi (www.partznet.com - the only place to get anything OEM)
Other good places to get parts:
-Victory Performance (www.victoryperformance.net) -Alamo Motorsports (www.alamomotorsports.com) -Eagle Automotive Warehouse (www.eagleautomotivewarehouse.com - actually another great OEM place for specialty stuff) -Dejon Tool (www.dejontool.com) -Summit Racing (www.summitracing.com) -Diamond Star Specialties (www.diamondstarspecialties.com)
Check these places out first to price compare, and also as good places to just see what they written down in terms of tech articles and stuff. If I think of more, I'll post more.

Welcome to the world of DSMs!
For 11 second quarter mile times, you will not need "NOS". You won't need nitrous either.
You can also be plenty reliable on factory internals. OEM pistons and rods are safe for around 450 horsepower. After that you will want to upgrade. There are plenty DSMs in the mid 11's on factory internals.
All of the links HybriDSM posted are great. Just make sure you read Vfaq.com front and back before trying to do anything to the car. That place is the #1 source for DSM info.
Welcome! If you ever have any specific questions, feel free to post. Just make sure to be very specific :)

Jeff you totally revived my faith in 2gnt'ers with 4g63's. He's right, screw the nitrous, you won't need it. And screw the rebuild, you won't need that either. My advice: 1) 20g turbo or comparable (FP Green/Red, T3/4) 2) Fuel Pump & regulator with 660 injectors or higher 3) SAFC or MAF Tuner...something to control fuel delivery
That's really all you NEED to run high 11's. Exhaust, intercooler, cams, Intercooler piping etc... will all help too but aren't vital. But be sure you know how to tune the motor before attempting 11's b/c a poorly tuned stock bottom end isn't going to like 400+ hp.

Well technically I am not a 2gnter. I sold my 2gnt over 2 years ago and have been playing with 4G63's since. :)

with all due respect to the above post---please do not bolt on a 20g or comparable turbo with only an SAFC and larger injectors. AN 11 second daily driver is gonna be all in the supporting mods...
There are 11 second cars on the 14b and there are never second cars with blocks with giant holes punched in them or melted heads...

High 11's aren't the hardest thing to reach. It all depends on the tuning. Yea you can burn up some valves and pistons with a 20g, injectors and an AFC, but you can do it just as easy with the supporting mods. Supporting mods won't save a poorly tuned motor, they'll make it easier to run 11's no doubt, but for those on a tight budget they may not be an option. If I had to toss another item to the list I'd say get an intercooler (a REAL one). But again for an 11 second pass you don't NEED it. Make a pass, wait untill the stock intercooler cools off again, make another pass. 11's all day long.

Yeah, I already have an awd but im not attached to it. I would dump it and get a FWD if it would benefit me more.
Thanks for the comments.

Just my opinion, but stick with the AWD. Yes the FWD will have better pickup speed on the highway, but if you want to run 11's, stick with the AWD. Too much power to FWD cars = tire spin all day.
What is your goal...beating people from a roll on the interstate, or beating them at the track. Either way, if you put 450 HP to the 4G63 motor, you are going to beat most people no matter how you look at it.

This shouldn't even be a consideration. Get/Keep AWD. FWD will make you cry at lack of traction. AWD will get you in the 11's with minimal mods. Fuel pump, injectors, SAFC, 2g MAS, 16g turbo (or bigger), upgraded clutch, K&N filter. Tune it and run 11's.
AWD. AWD. AWD.
