10693, I think my car is done with b/c of crankwalk!
Posted by Jarrad_GST, May-31-04 12:23 AM
I was just adding a air duct through my bumper to the underneath part of my intake and tighten some intercooler pipes.

I started driving my car and the air duct made my car much faster. I started hitting 20psi instead of the 15psi without messing with the boost controller. Maybe it was because I fixed some boost leaks or maybe cause of the air duct. So my car was running fast.

I get on the highway later on that day and put the car on cruise control. I hit a slight bump and my car make a crazy clanking noise coming from the #1 cylinder. Like around the head or the block, hard to tell.

Well anyways drove back home at 50mph with my hazards on and my car just kepted clanking and going nuts. The clanking noise was horrid loud noise and very inconsistent. The clutch seemed mushy too. Once I finally got off the interstate and put the car into neutral, and it continually died. And kept dying unless I reved it up. I got it home thinking my I was too lean. I drained my oil and nothing was in my oil. I took the oil pan off and used a pry bar too see if the crank moved. It moved quite a bit. I am going to get a feeler gauge and measure exactly how much.

So basically I think I have crankwalk. 55k 97 Eclipse GST.

I am going to get a 6 bolt swap and do it myself with my brother. Its fucking tradegic. I was going to use my paycheck to dyno tune my car. Oh well....

Should be down no less than a month. Will keep everyone detailed.

well, at least you will be a 6 bolt now. :D it can only get better from there. plus you have all your go fast parts that you can salvage from the car as is. we want lots of pics and VIDEO OF THE FIRST START. if you do not comply, we will have to ban you. have a nice day. :-)

Sorry to hear it Jarrad. I hope everything goes well for you in the 6 bolt swap. There is plenty of detailed info out there about how to do the swap correcty, so let us know if you need any help finding all the details.

Here's one to start with:

it sounds like your car had boost creep problems. 15psi to 20psi without any changes, looks like boost creep to me. i have the Evo16G as well and had to port the hell out of it and put in a 34mm wastegate flapper to stop the boost creep. RRE has it if you need it. my car suffered a lot from boost creep, from 16psi to 24 psi. i was afraid of running too lean. it sounds like your engine took a turd to say the least. i also had to do the barometer mode in order for my 2g to run properly. good luck with the swap. let us know how it turns out. -Scott

Just because it broke doesn't mean it is crankwalk, though a modded 97 with 55k miles is certainly in the correct demographic.

If you are tuned for 15psi and running 20, you very easily could have blown something up inside the engine. Take the engine apart and check it out.

sounds like you bent a rod not crankwalk. if it was crankwalk you wouldnt be able to drive it or start it, or you wouldnt notice anything. basically just do a compression check

also, crankwalk doesn't happen just like that. It's a gradual wear of the bearings.
Defintly sounds like you just broke something and then by driving home with it broken, you REALLY made a mess. :(

You guys could be right.... And thanks for the replies. I need some guidance here. Anyways I push the crank and my crank moved quite a bit. I DL the wav file of crankwalk sound and sounds like what I have but the only difference is, my sound doesnt have a pattern to it like the crankwalk file i heard. Its been raining alot but once I get time I will take a look at the pistons.

I also had a MBC, 34mm flapper and ported 02 housing so it wasnt boost creep problems. I just think I always had a boost leak and when I fixed it my car ran stronger.

Also if i had bent a rod, I last boosted getting on the interstate then put the car in cruise control. I drove for like 20 miles and then all the sudden this horrid noise starts...Don't I have to be boosting for my rods or piston to mess up.

where's this wav file at? :D

What clutch were you running? I'm a pessimist myself really (although i'm trying very hard not to be) and it could be something MUCH cheaper, so keep your head up! :thumbsup

good luck!

I was running stock clutch and just week before bought a Gabor 6puck clutch that has very little pressure on the crank. You guys do have me optimistic and I want to take my head apart but.. I have to wait till I get time. Even if it wasnt crankwalk I had it and was eventually going to happen. So I need to do the 6 bolt swap. My clutch would stick to the floor on left turns and I had to use my foot to prop it back to normal.

Another thing is.. if I blown something up in my engine.. I must be a moron.. I was full boost and watching my EGT gauge and it never went above 1500 degrees... And I thought I was alright.. But after talking to my brother he said you can still blow something. I didnt think I running was too lean. Their is another file in the pits where the guy blows his GSX which my car didnt sound anythign like.

wtf....that noise would drive me insane. i never heard that when i had cw, but the clutch did stick/lose pressure on the left turn. six bolt is in now and now i need a new clutch. fuck will it ever end :rolleyes ehhh just get a sixer

Yeah, well we've located a 6 bolt engine for a good price. It comes with everything we need save for the new rebuild stuff to get this swapped out.

After eyeing the crank and moving it back and forth, it appears to move a great deal more than merely .0055". I'd say it's moving at least an 1/10" or more. I do need to get under there with my feeler gauge.

If it was something else that caused the clanging such as a spun bearing, that's really irrelevant since he still need s anew engine and the beginning symptoms of CW as it is.
