well since no one else stepped up, I'll take a stab at it. ;) sounds like bushings gone bad, especially since the car has been sitting in the desert for so long. Should be easy enough to check out and almost as easy to fix. You can also see if one of the roll pins on the tranny side shift levers is coming out. A wobbly lever could do the same thing.
