9386, turbocharging your 2gnt...did it solve your problems?
Posted by 96eclipse2nr, May-16-06 03:50 PM
mods i put this in the pits to also get the opnion of those who have moved past 2gnt's and only contribute to the PITS sections.

i never thought id say this..but im at a crossroads here. im growing very tired of the "look fast, go slow" mentality that my 2gnt is showing. even to this day i dont see a whole lot of cars that can rival the drop dead sexiness of a 2g. however, as we all know our cars leave much to be desired. of course i have/had plans of turboing my 2gnt, and figured that might rekindle my love for my car..but anymore im not so sure. iv seen tons of guys who went turbo, only to end up selling their rides a short time later. i figured having more speed would be all the more reason to hang onto their cars..and thats why i ask for those of you who have moved on after turbocharging to put in a few words.

latley i have been looking alot a RWD vehicles...as i have also grown quite tired of FWD. older Z cars, older mr2's, rex's, these have all caught my eyes. but to be honest, none of them really peak my interest visually quite like my 2gnt. i dont want anything really new..so im lookin at older import "muscle" cars if you will.

this all brings me to another crossroads, in that i CANNOT afford a car payment right now. my plan would be to get rid of the eclipse and use that cash roughly to buy another vehicle. which presents ANOTHER problem..how to get rid of the damn thing. i mean..anymore it seems you cant even GIVE AWAY a NT unless you trade it in and get raped.

so i ask...is it likley a turbo and more power will cure my cars shortcommings in my eyes, or should i just save the money for something else? dont get me wrong...i dont need some 400hp beast to go racing in...i just want SOMETHING that peaks my interest during my commute and i can have some fun with on the weekends. youve all done it..your feeling full of it..you mash down the gas on your mighty NT.........aaaaaand it just falls flat on its face...

If you want the sexiness of the 2g and the power of rear wheel drive just sell your car, save money for a while and buy one mean virgin 2g-GSX, in my opinion if i ever and i done mean ever sell my baby it will be under the conditions of me getting a gsx. why settle for rear wheel drive when you can have all four of them bastards spinning together! not to mention your possibilities are endless and hp with the proper mods will do more than satisfy your taste for speed and control. for now my 2gnt satisfies my cravings but im at the point to where i want more boost , my car can handle it but i need the proper fuel managment to do it. just remember when you turbo your 2gnt, you will forever be putting money into it and it will require alot of maintance and up keep to keep it running good and strong, the first time you let it go it will blow up on you and leave you walking home in the rain. I have more money put into my car over the years than i can imagine but when i look back its all water under the bridge. i say piece together your own kit , build that engine strong, slap it on and go from there. up until this point with all your mods youve done on your car you havent even felt the difference that 3psi can do for you. i say boost it and be happy!

agreed. just for shits and giggles i did a search on autotrader and a lil bit on ebay. just about every gsx is either sitting with a blown engine, modified, or has major problems that need attention.

i guess what im saying above is..before i go dropping all kinds of crazy time and money into my car..i wanna make sure its worth it. and for the longest time i have thought it would be..but the fact that i see so many going turbo, then getting rid of their entire car makes me wonder if its not quite as great as i once envisioned. as long as i have a fast car..i could care less if its FWD, RWD or AWD. im just ready for a FUN car that can get me excited in ways that it should.

my pathy gets me over some pretty nasty shit and i have a blast doing it. the buick lets me ride in style and get tons of looks. the eclipse..only does about 1/2 of what its supposed to and thats look good AND go fast.

I've actually never considered my car slow, but that's because I was rolling in a 1g 1.8 before I traded it in for my RS. I've been rolling on 5psi for 3 years now, and i still think it's fast, hehe. However, i just can't stop this damn thing from leaking oil.

I voted yeah for now, because it definetly made me fall in love with my car more than any visual mod I've ever done, however, it leaves you just wanting more. I wouldn't do it if money was a big issue either, b/c you will be burning a lot of that on the car. The 7 psi or so started to feel slow, but I took my wastegate spring out when I went to inspection and holy crap the car was soooooo slow. I was so glad when I got the spring back in and got back to boosting, it was like my first time again.

I just got offered 11K canadian for my car the other day. I had to say "yea I was thinking 10 or 11ish"

I can't believe it really and if he comes back, I'm really going to sell it to him.

Don't get me wrong. 3 years ago when people on this board were selling thier cars I just got mine. I was in love with it for sure, no question, and some people are just getting into that phase. It'll likely die in a few years and youll want to get something else.

Except for Driggs. lol

He'll always have Daisy I'm sure.

If you do it right, you wont end up selling it.

After I rebuilt the engine and started pushing some good boost, I love the car. Yeah I have contemplated selling it, who hasnt had that thought before, but reality is, 2g's are the best.

Rebuild the engine, turbo it, and you will want to fuck your tail pipe every night :)

Boost it, then decide :-)

If you boost it and keep it sane, you'll be happy with it. If you are a boost junkie like me, you will get to a point where you have more boost than the front wheels can handle. At the same time, you'll likely have a car that needs lots of a attention to keep running well and not blow up. That's where I was 3 years ago. If I would have stayed around 10psi I would probably still have my car, but even 25psi wasn't enough. It all comes down to what you want the car to be. Daily driver? Low boost or no boost. If you've got another set of wheels to get around in, build the fuck out of it. The worst that could happen is you will spend some cash, bust a couple knuckles and learn a few things.

I liked my turbo 2gnt. It was really fast and unreliable as hell.
I liked my turbo GST much better. It was sorta fast, and reliable as hell.
The turbo 2gnt cost $5k in modifications alone.
The turbo GST cost $4k total, including the purchase price, all mods, and maintenance.

Yeah I'm thinking of getting a GST and putting my 2gnt in storage until I can afford to rebuild the engine for boost and swap the tranny. But are there any good sites for 4g63's? (well duh), i just kno of dsmtooners and yea, that doesn't make me feel any better about it :-\

There should be a local DSM forum depending where you are. For me it's newengdsm.org. Far better than tooners, that is for sure.

Also, I bought my completely stock GSX from a dealer for $5700 a year+ ago (which was still too much), and I bought my stock Talon AWD a few months ago for $2900 (all it needed was an altenator). They are out there, and they may not be as much as you think (at least the 2ga's).

Turbo and boost is good, I love to drive my car everyday turbo'd, I can honestly say that if my car wasn't turbo'd I'd like it much much less.

Its the greed for more boost that is bad.

Get just ONE launch in an AWD DSM and you won't be able to sleep till you buy one of them.

1Gs are a very cost-effective option and in many respects are better than 2Gs (though they can't handle for sh1t).

I'll never regret boosting my RS. The education I got from it alone was worth the $2k. I loved it. And in the 3.5 years it was turbocharged I never once had a problem with it.

well I can say that I haven't really moved on from the 2gnt but I have broadened my horizons. I have a 280Z now and I love it but the capabilities of my eclipse with the turbo and the things I did with I can't really match that with my Z. Even when I turbocharged the Z the eclipse RST is still the better.

Now one thing I'm damn sick of with FWD is doing maintenance, rebuilds, clutches, etc... Oh I've pulled the engine a good chunk of times lately but its not like it really gets any easier the amount of work is the same you just know the tricks to get it done. But seriously FR is soooo much easier to work on at least if you have a SOHC I6 it is anyway.

thanks guys...unfortunatley for the eclipse iv made up my mind in favor of other ventures.

im honestly sick of how finiky the car is. if things arent EXACTLY the way she wants them...she pisses and moans about everything. i keep my maintainance as regular as my wallet allows but this is rediclous. i cant imagie it being any better after turbo.

the eclipse went into storage yesterday and ill soon be lookin to sell her. id rather drive my beater pathfinder with 100K more miles, no A/C, no tint, and worse gas mileage because i know at least it wont leave me stranded like my 2gnt has over, and over, and over, and over again.

and i feel its time to move on. the sport is being invaded by more and more highschoolers by the day..and im ready to move on from that image. when i can get all my bills in order ill probably be picking up a early 2000 nissan fronty crew cab or a toyota tacoma.
