7558, Car insurance questions...
Posted by CopperEclipse96, Apr-12-06 04:43 PM
Man, what a pain in the ass this is. I'm getting quotes for a couple cars, and was wondering how it works when insuring multiple cars. For example, I got a quote for an EVO... $2,000 for 6 months. Fuck that, so I get a quote for an EVO and my Eclipse, with the Eclipse as my daily driver and that's only $1,000 for 6 months. So how does this work exactly? Let's say I would happen to accidentally drive the EVO a bit more than I indicated on my insurance application... will they find out? Any help is appreciated.

I hate car insurance. Mine is high for no reason. I have a near perfect record and I'm 24 next month. Still young but you would think after 8 years of driving it could be reasonable. I just have liability on the VR4 though. Pretty dumb but it's a waste of $ and I drive 4 miles to work everyday. I got plenty of friends who don't pay much for insurance w/ nice cars and it makes no sense. I need a shitty beater.

90% of all wrecks happen within 15 miles of the home. I guess that's because 90% of the time everybody is within 15 miles of the house, but it's a statistic none the less.

Insurance bites, but it's necessary. I pay a little over $1000 every 6 months for full coverage on my 98 gs and I'm 22 with an ok record. I think it goes down a lot when you hit 25 and it goes down a lot if you're married.

Your insurance will drastically change next year, i drove a v-8 mustang when i was your age and my insurance was crazy but on my 25th b-day when the new policy came in it was drastically lower, i have a perfect driving record, never a ticket with a wife with a not so perfect driving record and i have my eclipse, a mercedes, and my ford explorer on the same policy and i pay $110 a month for full coverage with gieco. BTW im now 29 so there is hope at the end of the tunnel hang in there

I am a licensed P&C agent for State Farm. I deal with this all day long. It would help to know what company you have since they all basically have there own rules when it comes to discounts, multi-car, mileage, pleasure work/school class ratings. Your best bet is the 2nd thing you said. First of all when your under 25, they rate you at that expensive rate. What most of you dont know is that they can NOT rate you as youthful operater(Under 25) on more then one vehicle. Therefore your second vehicle(EVO) is rated as if you are OVER 25 and on top of that, it would be considered low mileage/pleasure since you eclipse is your daily driver. About them finding out about your mileage...They could, what they normally do is send out a policyholder questionaire asking mileage driven and current miles. And if you dont answer it, the underwriting department will put through a cancellation for not returning the questionaire (yes they can do that). Make sense?, there are a few more loopholes but i cant get into them on here. Let me know if you have anymore questions. Or if anyone else reading this has a question... you guys have all helped me with my car, so i will try to help anyone who needs it in this field.

The EVO's a high risk vehicle, so if it's your only vehicle, you'll be driving it 100% of the time. This means that if you get in an accident, it WILL be in the EVO.

If you listed the eclipse as your primary, it's the vehicle you'd be driving around mostly (as far as they know), so the chance of an accident in the EVO is less now, say 25% chance of you being in it when you're in an accident.

Make sense?

They look at how much time you'll be spending driving the vehicle.

Also, once you turn 25, it'll drop. My liability bike insurance went from $300/yr to $98/yr. Car inurance went from about $360/6mo for liability on a 97 vert mustang GT to $800/6mo for full coverage on a 99 mustang GT AND full coverage on an 02 Sunfire with uninsured motorist coverage on both.

Basically, after I turned 25, it only cost me like $6 more a month for full coverage with UM on a newer car.

It's all about statistics.

I'm looking forward to my 25th birthday. Still a year away though. Jeff had an EVO and his insurance was pretty cheap I thought. I think he was 24 MAYBE 25 when he got the car though. Who knows.

I have Nationwide right now, but I will most likely switch when I get a new car. Getting a quote from nationwide, there were no questions about which car I will be driving regularly, or anything like that. I was considering geico, but what would you reccommend? Are there companies that dont send out the questionaires? Couldn't i just either A) lie about the milegae on the questionaire, or B) Say that it was driven on vacation, or I took it to the race track, or something like that?

Yeah you could easily lie on it, but theres a chance they could find out if you ever have a claim. As far as recommendations...I honestly dont know if other companies send out questionaires or not so i dont want to steer you in the wrong direction. My advice is just stress to them that the eclipse is you daily driver and your evo is your pleasure vehicle. if they end up checking up on your mileage then at least you tried....But by the time they find out you'll probably be 25 and a lot less expensive. Also do not LEASE the EVO. If you do the leasing company will require your liability limits to be at least 100/300/50 which will cost you a lot more in premium. Just shop around and if your not worried about Customer Service..then go with Geico or AAA or something. Plus those smaller companies probably wont check up on your mileage. The smaller companies are usually cheaper due to shitty Customer service and Claims procedures are horrible if you ever have an accident. If you were in PA i could help you. Good luck!

No connections in ohio, eh? :P

What kind of coverage is typically required for a car that I would be making payments on?

Hitting 25 made absolutely no difference for me. I saw a very very slight decline, if that. I have a spotless record. Only car I have on it is my 99 eclipse. I've shopped around, and can't find anything for less than AAA. Still like 1300/year. I don't get it.

State Farm is actually a very good insurance company from my experience. Unlike Geico and Progressive (from what I've heard) that have lower rates, you will never have problems if you file a claim. Things I've heard about geico and progressive range from making a repair situation overly difficult (co-worker) and trying to railroad the un-informed into a less than ideal fix, to rate increases, and even dropping you with a high risk label. Then no matter where you go for insurance it will be high. In Ohio, I had really good luck with Granger Insurance. They were well priced and had great customer service. If they were licensed in Kentucky I would still be with them.

Well, whether your financing or leasing, You'll need Comprehensive and Collision with a MAX of $1000 Deductibles. If your LEASING, you'll need to also have your LIABILITY LIMITS at least 100/300/50 (Bodily injury per person/per accident/property damage) where as if you finance, you'll only need your state minimums which should be 15/30/5. Hope that helps.
