Welder stats:
Older HTP micro mig welder
Looks to be in good condition

Long story shortened: I picked up a welder from a guy I know. He said it worked when he stowed it in his garage last year but when I plugged it in the wire feed motor doesnt work. I disconnected all the wires and cleaned up all the contacts but that did nothing. When you hit the trigger on the gun to feed the wire the relay kicks on but the wire feed motor doesnt do anything, and its not seized up either. Any ideas? Has anyone on here had to replace a motor because it burned up or anything like that? I really need this thing to work before summer vacation but it's given me more headache than what it's worth.

P.S. Ive contacted HTP America about it but I didnt get a response so I may drive up to their headquarters once school is out to get more info on it.

no prob. they should be able to help you over there. My fav. is the hobart forum . Even though yours isnt a hobart they still love to help all welders. Welding web is good too. I have many many more links if you need them.

You might want to take the wire core (flexible spring thing) out from inside of the welding hose thing and shake it out. Corrosion builds up in there resulting in the welder working too hard and still putting out a shitty bead.

Were is it located? If it's at your rental here I'd gladly take a look at it... After all, that kind of stuff is what I concentrated in for my undergrad studies.

It might be that the motor IS working, but there is a kink or a birds nest in there.

I tried out those sites that deej posted and I actually found a lot of good info. None of it pertained to HTP welders but it was still enough that I could get started. If I cant do anything with it then Ill let you know this weekend once the school work has died down a little.

Yessss. I found a dead fuse on a PCB in the electronics so im hoping that's the problem. Im off to wally mart to get a new one. Wish me luck!

Also, anyone ever use this stuff or seen it sold locally? (POR-20)

Yeah I was thinkin it had something to do with the motor being too tight or maybe seized but I took it off and just hooked up a couple D batteries to it and it worked like a charm. With that out of the way I checked the voltage at the wires that went to the motor and they had power going to them but then I checked the amperage and my meter read 0...wtf? Then I saw that fuse and checked it and it was bad.

Here's the latest on the fuse: They didnt have anything comparable at wal-mart so i searched around town and found a small electrical supply store that could order it for me. Tomorrow i should have it and we will see how it goes then.

I have por 15 for exhaust work. Its ok but I wasnt totally happy with it. I did a DP with it and it eventually peeled. If you want to try some out i can let you borrow the pint i have.

If you want Dave i can retrofit a different fuse holder for that PCB so ordering fuses is not a problem down the road.

That would be great, Terry. Ill bring it with me in May to the meet and you can take a look at it. It would be nice if I can just use a plain old automotive fuse instead of a special order deal.

Edit: Well, just got the fuse, put it in, hit the trigger on the gun and the fuse blew. argh

Disconnect the feed motor first then try it. The feed motor could be shorted out and blowing the fuse.

It works. It's a 12v motor but i tried it on a 6v power supply to be safe and it works like a charm. This welder has me stumped and it may never work but at least it was free ;)
