MPEG and AVI files are killing my computer. Even if I try to preview them in windows explorer. When I click on them to preview, or try to open them them though a media player my CPU usage goes to 100% and I can't do much of anything except hit the reset button. I've tried un-installing & re-installing Windows media player and Real Alternative to no avail. And about the only other changes I've done recently is get a widescreen monitor and set the resolution to 1280 x 960 but I don't see why that would fuck things up but I know just enough to be dangerous. It's been a while since I tried to watch a vid on my home PC so it's impossible to know all the changes I've made since...but nothing major. SO any ideas? Virus, mal-ware? I run microsoft anti-spyware, AVG, and zone alram so chances of that are smaller, but still possible I suppose.

oh...and I just added a 300GB storage HD..but I think I was haveing this problem before that....and again I don't see why that would f up just the video file playing ability.

What do you have for a video card? How much RAM? What CPU? Seems to me that you have a lot of videos? If so you could be taking up space that was designated as sort of a buffer area to play them, that is why ask about you RAM and video card. Other than that I suppose it is possible you could have a virus. Have you tried to defrag or ran scandisk lately? It hard to tell the problem from a distance, but I am just trying to make suggestions to give you something to go on.

cpu: AMD Athlon XP 2600+ Barton 333MHz FSB OC'd

I don't think this is a problem...it hasn't been in the past anyway. Doom 3 runs ok...except for the cinema sections...they are a little choopie. This problem seems localized to just videos. I can't even watch the little vids posted on the this site. It doesn't matter if I try to stream them from the web, pull them from my server or if they are local to the PC I'm trying to watch them on. The MP3's I pull from the server are fine so I'm pretty sure the problem isn't with the server or the network. I'll try doing some basic maintance and see if that helps. I'll update the video card driver too.

Ok, it definetley must be a software issue. I have a similar setup, but when I ran videos on my flatscreen TV via S-video it did the same thing. I had to mess with the video acceleration settings and things like OpenGL modes and Direct3D options. I wouldnt see why you would have to do that just to run them on 1024X768 though. Thats where I would look, try messing with your video card settings. I have a Nvidia GeForce and they have quite a few options you can change. Other than that I personally would just get the newest drivers and reload as much as you can.

new vid card driver seemed to fix it. :shrug
