6288, Have you seen this before? Posted by dsmmyth, Mar-26-06 11:28 AM
First off, I want to give you a brief background.
I work in a retail outlet store. Basically, it's just stuff you buy for a relatively lower price than the malls.
Anyways, these people came inside and they had their daughter...
On a leash.
I'm just wondering if any of you has seen that before? That was my first time and I thought that was the most inhumane thing (my co-workers agreed) to do to a child. Or were you ever on a leash yourself?

Like a leash on its neck, or one of those that go to the back, then around the body.
I agree with you though. They should just keep an eye on their child instead like normal parents.

Neck, in-humane, body.. there's not really definitive evidence pointing to it being bad for the child. Its just like holding their hand all the time but with less affection, but more freedom/independence for the kid... who knows if thats a good trade off or not.
personally I wouldn't do it to my kids, I'd make sure they knew to stay a certain distance from me or else lol

I see fewer of them nowadays so feel lucky to have a sighting! They were way more popular in the early 90s. I despise them!

Its a good idea for hyperactive kids, or kids with add/adhd. It gives the parents enough space to do what needs to be done, and not have to worry about taking their eyes off the kid for a second to let him dissapear.

No, it was like a harness on her belt loop or whatever. I was just wondering if it was common because I've never seen/heard of it.
And I messed up on the first post.
My manager thought it was inhumane. I sort of do, but she was real passionate about it.
Thanks for the responses.

Like me when I was a kid! After one incident I had to wear one of those damn things around my wrist (no, not for long), and if I remember correctly, it was like a sharp plastic thing going around the wrist.
I guess I had a fucked up childhood, but that's another whole long story.

Yea I see the ones that go around the body sometimes in the local mall. Never had one used on me. I think its ridiculous. Its like being to lazy to watch your kids so you keep them tied up!!

I had to wear one a few times when I was a kid. It was the one that went around my wrist and my mom had the other end on her wrist. It was like a red, coiled up bungee type of rope.

I prefer that to having them running screaming through aisles knocking stuff down and running into people's crotches.
Leaving them in the car is illegal, leaving them at home is illegal, so for a single parent that actually cares somewhat about shopping without being a major disturbance, I think its a good compromise.
If it were the least bit inhumane, it would be illegal. They can't even sell toys in this country without 3 pages of warnings.

those inivisible fence dog collar things work good to. you just set it so they're not supposed to a go past a certain distance away from the parent or they get a little "reminder". after a couple times the kids are very attentive to where their parents are.

I have seen those before, but it was more of a harness like a dog wears. Around the torso. I thought it was the cruelest thing I had ever seen.
