Well I dropped some flow a few months ago on a new PC. I wanted a fast gamer that I could overclock, world of warcraft must run flawless or i will die). Well Everything I read at the time said this board was the one to have .... so I bought it. Here is my current set-up.

AMD Athlon 64 +3200 Venice core
Abit Fatal1ty AN8 SLi Motherboard
Western digital SATA2 160GB Hard drive
OCZ Platinum Rev2 RAM (2x512MB)
Hiper Type R 580W ATX2 power uspply (32a on the 3.3v rail)
Thermaltake bigWater SE Liquid Cooling system (upgraded to 3/8 tubing)
I/O 16x DVD+R/-R/+RW/-RW Drive
Rosewill Geforce 6200 256MB PCIe Video card

Well this is the most unstable, worthless pile of crap i have ever built. I have built better with cheaper parts. For starters, can anyone help me OC this thing? Using the uGuru that comes with it, if I hit the factory turbo mode it shuts of instantly. Can anyoen lend a hand?

Thats a pretty impressive setup dude why is'nt it running flawless now? Give me some info on your default, fsb and multiplier from your bios and i'll help you out. Or you could always goto futuremark.com/community thats a forum I use to be on heavily when I was into computers alot. They are useful, futuremark is the company that makes the benchmarkcing software 3dmark. Everyone in there knows alot about overclocking and just about everything with pc gaming.

Forget the software overclocking from within windows. I hava an asus that has that feature and it does the same thing. It'll crash if I go over a certain point. I did some tests with sisoft sandra and didn't find any real results. So, I went into my BIOS and overclocked it there. I'm running a 478 P4 3.0 w/HT. I pushed it to 3.2 via the BIOS and saw real results in sisoft sandra.

Windows even picked it up as a 3.2 GHz CPU instead of the 3.0. The reason your board is unstable is because you're pushing it outside its factory set limits. Like turboing a 2gnt, if you push it too far, it crashes.

On my old p4 1.6 GHz machine, if I pushed it beyond 1.85 GHz, it would cause the sound to have static.

If you left it at the factory settings, I bet it'll run just fine. What I don't understand is why would WoW be slow on that setup...

Thanks. What happenes is the system will just start to bog. If I turn it on, 8 out of 10 times it will boot and tell me its in fail safe mode. I cannot overclock it at all. IF I use the uGuru that is built and switch it from default mode to turbo mode it will instantly shut off. If I run it in any mode other then default it will just lag on the network and take forever to do anything.

the FSB is set at 200mhz (hyperthreading since its and AMD) and the multiplier is at 10. its locked upwards sicne its not an FX chip. Everythign is set at the defaults because I cannot get it to run stable in any other configuration.

isn't Fatal1ty a cs player that had some lan party televized on mtv? oh yea throw WoW away and play cs.

Yeah we need that info ^^^ for the memory and cpu, and ALL your line voltages and operating temps to be even remotely useful.

DDR memory speed? Memory timing? Chip placement?

What thermal grease did you use?

Why do you want to overclock in the first place? Is a 2ghz machine really that slow?

Basically there's a hundred factors to consider and unless you have a ton of experience overclocking and burning up chips, its really not appropriate for the average consumer.

Much like turbo'n it is very essential that you keep it cool, without keeping your chipset cool, you can only raise the boost so high on your cpu and memory until it blows

I want to overclock it because I can. I have seen folks online claim to get this CPU form 2.0 to 2.8 with this board and that would be awesome. I would be happy getting half that.

...man that video card must go. now. get a 6800GS... or a 6600GT, you should be able to pick up a 6600GT for like $125 now, and thats what I use on an otherwise identical system to run world of warcraft with everything maxed in 1024x768, or if I am feeling saucy, without antialiasing and ansiotopic in 1920x1080 on my samsung DLP. but while you are upgrading, you may as well get the 6800 GS, which thoroughly spanks the 6600GT and is still crazy cheap.

hahaha like I just don't understand why you possibly kept that vid card? The rest of your system is, dare I say it, fuckin sweet, right at the high end of the middle range, but that video card belongs in an entry-level system designed to play Half Life. the first one.

edit: that reminds me, I always have texture detail set down because the 6600GT is lacking in video memory. the 6800 GS fixes that problem, so if you want to play warcraft and run through org with the framerate chugging less then it usually does, that is your ticket.

i ran out of money building the system, hence the $40 dollar card.

trust me its going real soon.

but back to overclocking. anyone got any tips.

Here is the formula for mhz... FSB*MULTIPLIER= MHZ

Example- FSB of 200Mhz * 10 As your Multiplier = 2000Mhz

Its better to raise fsb than multiplier raising the multiplier alot without increased voltage will result in yoru computer crashing. Take it easy though and dont go rushing into overclocking or you will mess it up big time and may find yourless unable to boot.

I've got the same processor and couldn't get it to overclock for shit. I think I had it at 2.2ghz up from 2 and it worked fine for awhile, but then stopped displaying a picture in Doom 3 and refused to boot again, so I just put it back to 2.0. I think the problem is my RAM (cheap value stuff), not the cooling... with your comp, it might be the timings on your RAM. overclocking has gotten much more complicated since the Pentium days :(

I have been reading on the net for a little while and what I found is that this board seems to work better if I slow down the ram and up the voltage. Problem is I dont know what any of that means other then turning up the juice. I really want an FX processor but that is way to expensive for me. So, I have tons of options in the BIOS on this board and I just dont know what they mean.

I had the same problem, adjusting the CPU was no problem, but RAM? foreign language to me. I remember when I tried this, I just copied step for step what people with the same core as me were doing, but I still couldn't get the same results.. I could get the same clocks, but had no stability. I do recall downloading a wicked program that gave me a lot more tweakability, I can't remember what it is called, but I got it from overclock.net and it is what let me tweak the RAM and voltages and whatnot, since the ASUS program I was using before sucked.

thanks for the sympathy with the car situation, hopefully it'll be back better then ever sometime soon... or replaced by a nicer DSM. who knows.

I downloaded amd tweaker, I have not had a chacne to try it yet. The baby is sick. Once I get a chance I will let you know. I read online somewhere that this group of gurus took the exact same ahrdware I have and over clocked this CPU to 2.8 ghz with a 325mhz ht clock. I tried to duplicate their settings and it bombed out. Wouldnt boot and no stabilty.

If you can still return this board do it and snag a gigabyte high end board (probably a bit cheaper too). The gigabyte easytuner software is cake, you can jsut manually tweak all voltages and clock speeds from a little application inside windows. It also monitors all temps/fans speeds/etc. If you have the option to return it =D

I would recommend it before a gigibyte, or even an ASUS A8N-SLI Premium. But I would personally run something from a smaller company like a Jetway 939GT4-SLI which was an amazing board at a wicked price. Anandtech tested it, loved it, and it is only $105

seems like a good setup, questioning the video card though. the psu you have only puts out 18a@12v though, so you cant get any super sweet ones. a 6800gs would be the one to get right now if you cant spent much. i have a 6600gt (agp) and its for me. im also running an amd 3700 64 bit thats 2.4 stock but 2.7 now. id suggest updating all the drivers to all the computer parts and go from there. does the video card have a power plug in the back you maybe missed? may reseat all the connections and make sure everything is good and snug.
