47498, What are examples of rare but not expensive sports cars?

First off, long time no see guys! I check on this forum from time but no much is going on so I thought I would start up a fun topic that I also started in supraforums "other car section". A quick recap of the past couple of months. I got married in April and I'm moving to Delaware (January), where I am finally moving into a house with a garage (2 car!)
After watching a lot of chasing classic cars, I have been tempted to find our generations "rare" cars and possibly buy one as a 2nd car. Lets try to keep the price under $25k but if it's barely over no big deal.

Just because you don't see a certain type of car on the road doesn't mean it's rare. Examples of what I'm talking about. An RX7 isn't rare because about 14,000 were brought to the states. However, a 93 CYM (yellow) RX7 is rare (350), a 94 R2 (395) and a 1995 RX7 (500). Here are some other examples

-1998 3000GT VR4 - 231
-1999 3000GT VR4 - 287
-1996 3000GT VR4 Spyder - 346
-1995 3000GT VR4 Spyder - 531
-1996 Sleath R/T TT - 57

These were easy for me to find because I have had 2 VR4's before and there is a site linked to 3si.org where I found this information. Here is the link to the supraforums post (you have to be a member to view though.....

I did a search for NSX's before and they weren't as rare as I thought although after 1996 they became more rare in the states. Anywhere between 184-476 imported to the states per year from 96 to 05, 2004 being the rarest. In 1991 almost 2200 were imported here.

Another car I was surprised about were the 1990-1995 Corvette ZR1's. I think it was almost 7000 units produced.

I'm hoping I can find something special but I keep getting drawn back to getting my 3rd VR4 so I'm not learning my lesson. 1998's are so rare (231 made) yet there are 4 on autotrader ranging from 8-11k or so. Pretty cheap IMO. Even the body style makeover for 1999 and the Spyder aren't that expensive anymore (15k-20k+)

sorry I have no interest in a Neon. The only ACR I'd consider is a Viper.

^^^ This.

Of course, I might point out only 3,009 of these were ever imported to North America and less than 1500 or so are likely to remain on the road or viable for restoration.

Yeah. I'm a little biased.

I'm also a fan of the Galant FTO, which was never sold in the US and is, as you can clearly see, exponentially cooler than a Datsun 510.

Seen these before the public and drove them around at a Chrysler Dealership I worked for before my daughter was born 1999.

How about a 1976 mig, and they pop up on craigslist every now an then. They look like an old porsche, Eric talk about.

Not rare at all. I saw 10 of them at one show last month.

You touched on a little above. But, if I had an extra 25k laying around to spend on a fun car it would be a 1st gen Viper. It's something about the spartan accouterments, killer exterior styling and a big engine that appeals to me. 94's can be had for around 25K, but there was just over 3000 produced. The older or newer you go the lower the production numbers...by quite a bit.
