42549, Should I buy?? Posted by 97AllMtr, Dec-11-09 02:26 AM
I have a chance to buy a 1994 Mitsu Eclipse gs (turbo) that had the timing belt break. It had 100k miles on it and the interior is flawless. It has one big dent on the rear driver side panel and the drivers door. The timing belt broke and bent the valves in the head. He wants $500 for it, should I buy it?

You mean a 94 GSX, I would do it. Its a 50/50 it might not have bent valves. Keep your 2gnt as backup DD. Do you have pics, post'em up at mitsu-media.com If does need a rebuild guys over at mitsu-media would helpyou out of what to buy. Thats a great deal for the price 100k 1g for 500.

Judging by the original post, that's incorrect, Dale. There was no GS-T designation for 1g's. It was GS Turbo.
OP - Depending on the rest of the car I'd say $500 isn't a bad price, if you have no qualms with doing a rebuild.

$500 isn't bad, but expect to put money into it to get it where you want it to be. If I had the time & resources I'd pick it up.

Every true DSMer should fix up at least one 1g/2g in their lifetime! I already brought one back from death, and another from eternal hibernation, so my service to the cause is fulfilled :)

Actually I just found out that it's a 1990 with 130k miles on it. The only thing wrong with it is the broken timing belt with some bent valves. Interior is flawless, just looked at it today. (stock radio even) One owner. Turns out it only cost me $400.

Any 1g 4g63 manufactured before early 1991 was a 6bolt, I dont care what other sites say I had a 92 TSI that was manufactured in early 1991 and it was in fact a 6 bolt.
1992 was the mixed year some had 6 some had 7 but manufacturing date was how to tell.

Nice, thanks. I should be picking it up next week sometime. I have a complete head I'm looking at getting and rebuilding for it, I'm just worried that the pistons were damaged in the bending of the valves.

You can find tons of information about 1g at mtsu-media.com They know there stuff. I read over ther that 3g lifter/rockers, 2g pistons/1g rods,bc 272 is great. You can convert it to turbo, still use the same block rebuild with the folloing pistons/rods stated above, and use the cams and lifters mentioned in the turbo head. Some would don't do it but there's people that have done it 2g pistons/1g rods and going into the low 11s high 10s. Sign up over there, you'll get tons more help.

I just signed up over there. So, you're saying I can use stock parts to make it way stronger of a motor? It's already turbo. Thanks for the help.

? This is all common info that you would find on any 1g/2g turbo site. Done all the time. Old news. I'm sure your local boards would have that same info.

Now, the question is, do I just replace the head and keep it cheap, or take the block out as well, and rebuild the entire thing. Anyone know of a full rebuild kit for cheap? Not crappy cheap though. I have seen Topline rebuild kits for many motors, but have heard mixed reviews. Anyone have personal experience with one of them? I'm thinking about buying a used head and rebuilding it to stock and spend as little as possible....... Any advice as to what you guys would do?

Checkout mapeformance at mitsu-media. They carry kits and I really think you would great response from the MM crew. If I owned a 4g63 thats where I would get my questions anwsered or I would lurk in the tech threads, there or at dsmtuners. Just a suggestion, have fun.
