41154, Animal Control won't do anything
Posted by whtclipse98, Aug-12-09 09:08 PM
My friend's cat got killed by a couple pitbulls and the pitbulls attempted to attack her but she got inside before that could happen. The owner of the dogs picked them up, took off and parked at somebodies house for a few minutes then went to his house. Animal control and the police showed up and said that since they didn't see it, they couldn't do anything. My friend even had a picture of her cat. This is the second incident that night and the area is a leash law area. The owner denied owning them, said he was watching them for a friend and lied about where he lived. My gripe about this is that is it gonna take a kid being attacked by one of these dogs for animal control to do anything? Looks like it unfortunately. What are your thoughts.

Have a "chat" with the owner. Let him know in no uncertain terms that if you see them running freely again, they'll have to be taken home in a box. After that, it sounds like a big bowl of anti-freeze, or a .22 would be your only recourse.

what kind of area do you live in? if it's semi-rural then if the pits come on the property again then you can shoot them. If it's a nice compact neighborhood then you may have to call the police.

Also check the local breed laws. They may be illegal in your area. Most metro areas restrict owning/breeding pits and rotties

Shooting or poisioning or killing a dog is not legal. You will be arrested on criminal and civil charges and treated like Michael Vick.

You may be confusing the cat and rodent extermination laws, which DO permit cats on your property to be exterminated. Dogs are protected. Cats typically aren't.

If animal control won't do anything, then you're in the wrong and the dog owners are in the right, plain as that. If you don't like your neighbors and can't agree with them on boundaries, call the Sheriff.

That depends on the area. In my neck of the woods we have livestock protection laws. If ANY dog comes on your property and you feel unsafe you have the right to shoot it as long as it's unleashed and the owner doesn't have control of the animal. Now this is because the county is considered a rural area. Go north one county and firing a gun for almost any reason other than a home intruder or on the range and you're screwed, but that county prohibits pittbulls.

Again... don't confuse livestock laws and self defense laws. Be real clear about your local laws, and what's in danger, before you start shooting. With that rationale, you could shoot at cars that come up your driveway if you feel unsafe. I doubt that's the case.

Even when you're clearly acting rationally and lawfully, you're not immune from a civil lawsuit from the other party.

Now you're taking it way beyond the letter of the law. The law protects a home/landowner from penalty against shooting and killing an ANIMAL that wanders onto their property. Cars and people are not animals. That's what the "make my day law" is for, and that only applies to the inside of your home

My family has lost one of their animals to a loose dog that attacked and killed one of their goats and nearly killed one of their horses. Animal control took the dog and euthanized it, but they specifically told us that we have the right to shoot any threatening animal and they will come remove the body. Even showed us the law in the book.

We have crazy Game & Fish here in Arizona. It's like fucking CSI in the god damn forest. I'd burn it just to make sure nothing seems super appealing to other scavengers.

I love pitt bulls and was actually thinking about getting one but after doing research I saw too many stories of them turning on owners and killing children in homes that they had been in since puppies. They are just too unpredictable and in my opinion should be made illegal to own just like lions and other wild animals.

If chased by one of those dogs again....let them chase you into your house and call animal control or shoot them in self defense.

I am against mistreating "Pets" but when the safety of a person is at stake.....well you gotta do what you gotta do.

DOnt poisen them, no reason for the dog to have to suffer. If anyone should suffer....its the owner.

I know someone whos dogs were fed antifreeze.......dont do that to the dog trust me, you will not feel good about yourself in the long run when you see what it does to the animal.

If it happens again, shoot the dogs first, then the owner, and call it a day :thumbsup

If I hear of anyone shooting a dog, especially a Pitbull, I will personally hunt you down and return the favor. Now cats on the other hand, well, I've had my fair share of them. Never heard of a dog climbing all over a car before :P

What are your thoughts.

My father had an issue like this with neighbors when my brothers and I were just kids. A week after the last of the cops being called the dogs just disappeared*. I remember our neighbor calling the cops on pretty much everyone on the street trying to find the dogs but nothing really came of it. I guess times were simpler back then. I guess if you want to be all responsible about it your friend could start a neighborhood petition and/or start annoying his local news sources for a short piece.

* - coaxed to the far end of the street, gassed, driven out into the boonies, shot, burned and buried.

Don't get me wrong, I love animals but nothing irks more me than domesticated animals not being truly domesticated. At that point they are nothing more than animals and should be dealt with as such. My only regret is that owners can't be lumped into that same group.

Well from talking to my friend, everyone on that street is keeping an eye out for them cause apparently this isn't the second incident. There have been numerous animals(domestic and wild) found like this covered in slobber. The area is a leash law area, which means that regardless of the type of dog, it has to be on a leash at all times outside an enclosed area. The dogs are hunting together, which is in their nature. I have seen pitbulls be sweet and nice but I have also seen their darkside and seen what they can do. My biggest gripe about this is that 1. The owner did not apologize for his animals behavior and lied to the cops. 2. There are kids in the neighborhood and it's probably gonna lead to one of them getting attacked before animal control will do anything.

Unless you're planning on dealing with this in a spur of the moment type setting (not recommended) then plan to hit him where it hurts the most, his wallet or his freedom. Learn his habits via a time line and one of you two chuckle heads needs to take a few days off of work and start photo documenting everything. Photos of the dogs not on leashes in open areas. Photos of the dogs in his care to prove ownership. Videos of their aggressive behavior. Get the neighbors in on it too. Take it all to the authorities when he slips up or whatever. If you do it right he'll be slapped with so many fines his head will be spinning.

Be proactive.

Well from talking to my friend today, these are the current events. My friend called and spoke the the superior of the guy who came out. The man apologized for his employees behavior and stated that since the man had put the animals inside and out of reach, that is why nothing was able to be done.(would have been nice to know that the day of) So my friend along with his neighbors have filed numerous complaints about the two dogs and since this was the second reported incident, the animals have been classified as dangerous and are now therefore no longer allowed outside of the gated area or house without mussles or control harnesses. The owner of the dogs is being fined by animal control for violating the leash law and along with that, my friend has pursued damages against the animals so the guy is gonna have some hefty bills to take care off.

Holy Shit!! A dog attacked a cat? There MUST be something wrong with it... lol
Dogs chase cats. That's what they do. Whether it's a pit bull or a beagle...
Pitbull vs People? 1/2 the problem is a person looks at a pit bull and immediately gets scared. The dogs sense it and it puts them on the defensive. The people stare at the dog because they're scared and the dogs take the eye contact as a threat. Classic fuckin scenerio.
Now, the irresponsible dumb shits who own thes dogs because they are badasses and let them roam unleased are the ones who need to get shot.
They are terriers. They are game dogs. They have instincts. They need to be UNDER CONTROL at all times.
I own a pitbull. I've owned a few. She is NEVER off leash outside my home.

There is a difference in a dogs chasing a cats and two dogs grabbing a cat off a porch and then mauling it in the driveway. Way BIG difference and doing it twice in one day.
