4112, The darker side.....sold my 2gnt..390WHP All motor Posted by TXTurboGS, Feb-26-06 08:10 AM
After not much success with my money pit called 2gnt, I switched to the darker side. Before and after pics.
Before:

After:

The best part:

I had an rx-7 before but I sold it due to high maintenance and the rotary does not do well in 110 degree weather, specially as a daily driver. So I swtiched to something that I could drive daily and have plenty of power with no need for turbochargers...hehehe.

LOL, if you lived where I live, you would understand why rotaries are not the best of engines.
I was lucky, I bought my previous FD with a low mileage and it lasted all through summer and winter. The turbos were not so lucky nor where the vacum lines.
Not to mention that you could not turn the AC on without it overheating.
Trust me, once you drive and LS1 FD, there is no turning back.
I am at 390WHP, untuned at around 11:1 AFR, timing I don't know. I have a cam, CAI, headers and exhaust and I love it!! My next thing is the intake mani for a FAST LSx and some AFR heads. I will be driving at 430-450 WHP and not have to worry about turbos or apex seals, LOL.
Don't get me wrong, the rotary is a nice engine, if you can afford it and have a reliable mechanic or do the work yourself. I don't have either of those.
The only thing I worry about is my stock rear end, luckly, I have a set of axles on the way.

That sir is one sweet car!!! Your almost making me want to look on autotrader to see what they run on average. Hence I have this money pit that sits in my driveway and prevents me from owning another car.

Not a fan of the swap, but I understand why you did it. Clean 7 none the less.

Just how much did that run you, or did you buy it as is?

Although I prefer those swaps in FC's and older RX-7's I understand that the motors are a pain. Gotta love the sound of a rotary though. Love the front end on it. EDIT: BTW, why did u get rid of the spoiler? Also how wide are those rear tires. good lord.

awesome I don't blame ya. I heard they get decent gas mileage too. We've had a couple FC conversions with those motors here one of them I saw at a drift event and man it could drift!
Always wondered how does a FD's handling compare to lets say a mildly tuned suspension on a 2GNT? I heard the FD goes where you want it and accelerates when you want it to. O_o they're still damn expensive too.

Thanks for the good comments :)
As for the car, I purchased it with the swap already done. The previous owner paid $14000 for engine, tranny and labor. They performed it at one of the best places to do it, Hinsonsupercars.com. They have a twin turbo LS1 RX running 9's on pump gas.
The rear tires are 315's, BFG drag radials. The wheels are Forgeline 9X18 on the front and 12.5X18" on the rear. For this I cut the fenders and molded some Pettit Racing fender flares. The front bumper is a Mazdaspeed replica by Pettit Racing. It allows for plenty of air to hit the radiator which is a problem with the original bumper, specially for rotaries.
I paid $20k for the car but I painted it, did the body work, wheels and rubber. I got a hell of a deal if you ask me. It only needs tunnign and I'll be hitting above 400WHP, can't wait to add heads and a different intake mani.

TR 224/224 LSA 112....Hinson long tube headers and magnaflow 3 1/4 " Ti axleback exhaust. It has no cats and the muffler well, does not muffle. It rumbles and sounds nice. LOL, it is something that a lot of people do not expect. The ones that know how rotaries sound trip when they hear it at WOT and idling.
It is an Rx-7, its not a car for everyone. It makes tons of noises and the it just transmits every road crack into the chassis. The interior sucks cause it is made out of cheap plastic. Once I am done modding it, I will replace most if not all the plastic interior.
Some guy is producing a fiberglass hood with a "cowl" that will enable us Ls1 RX-7's to fit individual thottle bodies or roots type superchargers. It is not a "cowl" like the domestic cars run, but something that keeps the stock look but more aggressive amd functional.
If you wish something with more balls, you can always stroke and LS2 and put a wild cam in it or you can spray up to 150 shot of nitrous on stock internals. There is a guy with an LS2 with over 500WHP and over 600 with nitrous.
If you are into drifting, then check shockdrifting.com to see an LS1 FD in action. You can search streetfire.net for the white rx-7 video, it sounds sweet.

There is a bunch of other better videos.

Isnt the car harder to control now as far as steering when you punch it?

Nah....the motor is actually pretty close to the same weight cause of all the aluminum on the ls1.
I undersatnd why you bought the car but my fd would have a rotary uner the hood.
I am one of those people who believe that is sacriligeous. :P But if I drove it I would probably think it's...okay ;)
