40818, A lil hobby that anyone does? Posted by Flipboi89, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Curious if anyone takes cars that are broken down and restores them and re-sells them. I know Azdave does a little and curious if anyone else does. I found one that I think Im gonna try.

Restore? No. Flip? yes.

40820, RE: A lil hobby that anyone does? Posted by teklein, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
I do it every once and a while.
I have a friend, he fronts the money for the car, I fix/clean/whatever it, then we split profits 50/50 and he gets his initial investment back.

I'm trying to get into parting/flipping cars. Honestly I'd like to get to the point where I'm able to do stuff like stangmurdera

My father did when I was kid, I helped him out abit. I've thought about doing this, after he passed on. Takes alot of money though but you could make a profit on the side.
I recomend for you to keep your current job while doing this, if this is how you want to make a living.

I've parted a few out and since have found a few more I've considered buying to part out or fix up, but I just don't have the time right now.

I've done two 2gs. But I take highly modded ones, make them stock (increases the resale value in these parts), and switch all the mods over to my original 99rs. I've gained somewhere on the order of 12k in mods doing that, and the cost was just wrench time.

40841, RE: A lil hobby that anyone does? Posted by Warmage12, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
I've helped do it with civics and 240's. They flip easy and always bring a good return. Its fun too. especially if your de-ricing or bringing it back from the brink. Seeing a clean, finished, fun to drive OEM car is great. Driving them is even funner. HELLO RELIABILITY AND GAS MILEAGE!

Can one of you guys come to Chicago to de-rice this thing. I just saw it and thought of this thread. http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/cto/1285779486.html
Doesn't seem like too bad a deal either, talk him down a few hundred.

Once, while already drunk, I chugged a bottle of apple pucker... The ensuing vomit was the same color as that car, How uncanny.

Damn :puke I see one just like that every once in awhile on my to work.
Props to his build but shake my head at the style, of it.
I bet you guys saw the 1995 F&F car up on ebay going for 35k

I flip about 2-4 cars a year. I buy them wrecked. Works out really well, scene my dad owns a body shop. I just use his supply's to help fix them.lol I do a few restores, Along with custom cars and trucks.

40881, RE: A lil hobby that anyone does? Posted by RoninEclipse2G, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
I'd look into flipping cars a little more but CO law limits you to 3 sales per year before you have to get a dealers license which is a HUGE hassle and headache.

I thought alot of the 2gnt would do this too lol. I mean I wouldnt rely on it for all my income just some extra cash. I mean If I can buy a 2g for 700, put about 300 into it and sell it for more Id be happy. I should look into other cars too.

+2 also.
I've seen two 2g's that went for 800 up on craigslist one was a 95 talon mtx rust free had all original parts motor needed rebuilt for 300 and a gst shell in tact No rust anywhere had tranny just needed a motor that went for 500 (perfect 6bolt project)
I would've bought both first would be to pull the motor from the 95 talon rebuild it and rebuid the mtx from it, swap it into my current 97 Gs.
Sell the talon parts to evryone here make a small profit and use the GST shell build a track car.

You have to be smart these days about what a car is really worth before you try to flip it. -I never buy a car unless I know I can get my money back immediately by parting it out if things don't work out. Values have fallen seriously in the last two years. -I never title a car if I don't have to. I have sold several with open titles and let the next guy fill in the buyer info. The state never has a record I ever owned it. -I never a title a car that will be parted out. -I never buy a car to resell if it has an out of state title. -I never buy a car with a lien unless the seller goes with me to the MVD to get a free and clear title.
I've also flipped 3 Hondas, 2 Mazda trucks and a Malibu Classic in between the cars shown below.
Here's my thread from our local az2gnt forum titled...
"A Brief History of Time (in Azdave's garage)"
I thought it would interesting (or maybe serve as a warning to others) to look back at where I've been in this 2G Eclipse/Talon love affair.
The cars are mostly in chronological order starting with the green RS I bought in 2003. Some are shown partially stripped even though I got them whole. Most suffered from severe motor issues. The list ends for now with the white 99 GS I just sold. I might be missing a few other 2Gs that got parted out along the way but maybe it's best I not remember them all.
Bought from the Budget Rental car lot in 2003. This is my baby with the LED addiction.
Bought with no motor. Sold for parts. Gave away chassis on CL for free.
Bought with huge hole in motor block. Restored fully and sold same day I placed the ad.
Bought with timing belt failure. Parted out.
Bought with no motor. Parted out.
Bought with bad motor. Parted out.
Bought with no motor and completely screwed electrical system. Parted out.
Bought with a fried clutch and no first gear. Also had collision damage to the trunk. I was able to drive it home to part it out or so I thought. After selling off many parts, the brother of a former az2gnt member bought it and put it back on the road.
This 98 GS was literally driven through a brick wall. The guy was real dick and his ad said the car just needed a lower control arm and you could drive it home! He tried to make the car look better by laying the bumper in front of the damage but he set it there upside down! He refused to accept my very fair offer and let it set for another month while continuing his deceptive ads on CL. I told him my offer would decrease by $100 for each week he waited. He eventually called me and I got it for cheap after the long delay. Corivus bought the motor from this one.
I almost forgot this one. The only automatic I ever had. A 98 GS with a bad motor. I repaired the engine, restored the cosmetics and sold it.
Bought from a former member here with spun (fused) rod bearings and trashed looks but I'm well on the way to restoring this one. I drive it daily to get some miles on the brand new motor with Ross, Eagle, ARP, components.
Bought this one in good mechanical condition. Did a full restoration and auctioned on ebay to a buyer in PA. This is one I probably should have kept. Beautiful car.
Purchased 1-1/2 AWD cars from the owner of this Talon. This one had an engine fire and is being restored by Level 7. The other AWD chassis was sent to the scrap yard before he was able to get me access to where it was stored. I got the motor, seats and few other items but most of the 5-spd AWD components were lost to the crusher.
I bought this last year as a sister to the other 95 GSX I'm restoring. They are one month apart in age and this was very handy to have around for trouble shooting or tracing wires on the other car. I drove this most of the fall until the other GSX was ready for the road. It is awaiting it's final destiny.
I bought this last December with a bad tranny. I was going to part it out but found a good tranny and then did a full restoration. I sold it to the first person who came to see it.

Mike, You kidding? This is about the worst place to make a profit on selling stuff. We're all a bunch of cheap-skates here you know. :)
Dale, I typically perform all scheduled maint like T-belts, hoses, accessory belts, plugs wires, brakes, fluid flush, wipers and fix any leaks or drips. Cosmetics usually include paint buffing and a full interior strip down to the floor boards so I can shampoo the entire car. Many cars have also receive new tires and OEM hatch struts. I also make sure that every single item on the car is working like power antenna, cruise, A/C, etc.
Each car is different of course but I usually get well above KBB due to the "over-the-top" detailing I do. That translates to a nice profit "if" I don't count all my labor. It generates some nice play money but it's not something I want to do because I have to. That would take all the fun out of it.
I also take extensive detailed photos so people coming to look at it know upfront how nice it looks compared to others they have shopped for. If I have replaced the motor I show detailed shots of the repair process too.
flipboi89, I keep some of them 6-7 months while I search for parts and fix them up while I enjoy driving them. The parted out cars usually are taken apart quickly so I can get the chassis out of my way. The 99 OZ I just sold was bought in Dec and stored until I got a low mileage 5-speed from another parts car. After it checked out completely the resto began and then it was sold in June about a month after I got it running.

So much patience lol. Curious you search for most of the parts and stuff online or you know people who have the hook ups? lol

After parting out so many cars I am usually my own parts supplier.
Engine rebuild parts and gasket sets are from the Part Dinosaur. I get a nice discount at the local Mitsu parts counter when I have to go OEM. With that discount I buy at the same prices like found at JNZ Tuning (without shipping but with tax) so it's about the same except I get my parts immediately.
Craig's List has provided most leads for cars and some parts. A lot of my really good buying deals involved getting there fast and having cash in hand.

I sold my last one about 2 months ago but I know a friend here in PHX with a spare. It has the typical clear coat haze so it will need a re-paint. A buffing won't do it. If interested shoot me a PM.

I thought I was over this addiction but when no one else came up with the funds...
This once gorgeous 99 GSX was rear ended by drunk driver. It belonged to a friend who fortunately is sore but okay after a wild ride up and over a center median. The part out is in progress.

Yup. GSX was doing about 40 and was rear-ended by and SUV doing about 85 they think. MIke said he nailed throttle when he saw her coming up but did not have time to get out of the way. This happend in the afternoon on a bright sunny day. Lady in the SUV was wasted and arrested on the spot.
