39914, Need a quick idea Posted by eclipse982nrRST, May-05-09 05:58 PM
I am in the process on making a bike rack for my Traiblazer...I ordered some cradle bodies for the rack (the body that slides onto the rack and straps the bike to it) but they were the wrong ones I ordered. So, now I am trying to think of something else that I could use by the weekend....anyone have any ideas or pics of something I could pick up locally at like a home depot or lowes or something? Thanks!

Since I have no idea what the cradle looks like, can't you just bend some steel and make them yourself?

I could yes, but it would scratch the bike then.

just tape a bunch or foam or garbage bags to the steel so it wont scratch the bike.

Its going to be an aluminum rack. Im thinking of maybe just bending up some flat sections of aluminum sheet that I have to match the curve of the bike frames and gluying in some tool box drawer liners I have laying around the house, welding that too the bottom for the bike frame to rest on, and then making a matching top piece, and using a large stud and wing nut to hold that down. If you get my drift, it should work, and hold up better then straps actually.

go to home depot / lowes / etc
go to Plumbing isle get a length of PVC pipe
next go to Water heater isle get copper pipe foam insulation
cut pipe in half, cut foam in half, glue foam insert into pipe cut to final length paint install strap bike in and go

Good Idea, however, how do I clamp these down once I cut in half?

:scratch lol how fast you planning on going there sparky? umm bungee cord, duct tape, Epoxy, JB Weld, string, whatever personally i use velcro to strap mine down.
to attach the PVC to the mount itself drill 2 holes spaced just larger then the diameter of the bar and use zip ties for a cheap quick way or use a "U" clamp for more secure attachment
